I'm getting myself in a right old muddle with what to buy to get my Momo wheel on.

I've bought at Momo Course exactly like this one:



It has come without any of the bits so it looks like I need:

Boss
Horn/centre button
Screws (allen head?)

Can anyone advise which are the right articles for an early square dash car?

Also, the standard wheel really brushes my thighs when making aggressive turns. As the car is being rally prepared it will be doing a lot more aggressive turning (!) so I'm considering 2 other options:

1) A eccentric hub/boss spacer

or

2) A quick release to make getting in and out easier once the bucket seats are in.

Can someone please help me put together my shopping list!?

You will need a boss. If this is a Momo or other brand which incorporates the horn ring then it will be model specific, suiting either 924s & series one 944s or series two 944s inc 968s (series one = 1982-`985; series two = 1986 onwards).

If the boss uses the cars original horn ring then it will almost certainly suit either type provided that the correct ring is fitted.

'Fitting kit' screws are freely available on eBay but a new boss should include them, along with the horn push mountings. These a pieces of thin pressed metal which reduce the size of the wheels centre bore (Momo wheels up to around 1987 had a smaller centre bore into which the horn pushes fitted - since then the centre bore has been a couple of mm larger whilst the horn pushes have remained the same so virtually all of them will need to use these adapters. I have a 1986 Prototipo which fits directly into the wheel, but everything else needs the adapter) and are fitted between the boss and the wheel.

Momo make an offset hub extender which JJC and DT sell. Will scrutes be happy with a detachable wheel that isnt of the weld-on type?

You need a series one boss, just go on ebay and type in Momo porsche boss there will be loads. An eccentric boss will make the aggressive turn/knee interface problem worse as it will give more leg room to get in but then on sharp turns will cause the wheel to come down further. You may if strapped in to a bucket depending on leg length need a long boss/extension though.

Momo hornpushes are available with Porsche badges, or the original momo one is quite nice.

As above the countersunk socket head cap screws should come with the boss.

I seem to recall mk1 golf was the same boss wasn't it chaps?

Righto, thanks chaps. I'm going to try it with just the standard boss and see how I get along.

I've decided I'm not going to get the car caged just yet, I'll run it in the two events this winter without and see how that feels. Everything else coming out of the interior though and will be sourcing two new seats. Am considering these from OMP as they'll give decent ish support with 4 point harnesses and will make getting in and out easier.



Oliver - as you'll find out soon I am absolutely mental large! 6'3'' , 33'' legs and not far off 20 stones. Think rugby forward gone to pot and you're there. Need to make use of every spare inch of space!

what type of rally events are you doing which allow non caged cars ?
I would cage it to be as safe as possible , you will know what it is like on any event , tend to get carried away.

I do the long distance regularity road rallies, most of which are in Europe and run on an FIA permit.

I probaly will get it half caged, just looking at finances at working out what can be done and when.

I have screws if you need them

A Porsche crested Momo (manufactured) horn push will only cost about £20 new - its something Id never buy used as they sell for more than their new cost on eBay. The 'ring' in that eBay listing is a Momo Race external trim ring and it wont actually fit with a Porsche crested push as they have a rounded shoulder and the trim ring has a square cut out on its inner face.

The horn mountings rings are thin passivated stampings and theyll come with the boss, particularly if you buy a decent brand like Momo. Itll also include the screws.

Ive seen the Porsche pushes for a little cheaper but cant recall where. I am loathe to suggest that anyone deals with Pork Chop, but they do have them in stock.

I can take a picture of the mounting tin rings if required, but Id suggest that you buy the boss forst and then see if you still need anything - I suspect that all youll need is a push.

Rollcentre for the cage, without a doubt. Without front section hangers too, if you want.

Thanks gents, I'll order that boss in the link then which seems to be a real Momo item and go from there.

Re the cage - thanks too, I'm currently 'enjoying' getting the glue off all internal metal surfaces. I'll drop them a line when done.

I've got my proper Momo hub kit for my Corse wheel, as you suggested it has arrived with the hub assembly, mounting bolts and horn adapter ring things.

So, last question I promise...

Which horn push do I need!?

On JJC, Demon Tweeks etc they all mention which wheels the horns fit and none of them say my wheel! DT mention the Prototipo and I'm not sure if my older Corse is the same fitting.

There appear to be two different types of Momo horn push. The Porsche crested type have a rounded shoulder and the Momo branded type have a small square shoulder, with both styles having the same internal diameter.

Later style wheels such as the race, which include an anodised trim ring, cant use the round shouldered push with the trim ring because the cut out on the rear of the ring only suits the more common square shouldered push.

Most (all if the new Prototipo does too) new Momo wheels have a larger centre bore than they did originally. This is why the boss includes the stamped fitting rings. If your wheel has the original smaller bore then any Momo horn push will fit directly into the wheel itself. If it has the newer slightly larger bore then youll need to use the fitting kit, but as far as I am aware all pushes will fit all Momo wheels.
