Worrying title, but it may not be that bad. I have been reassured that my car has a fuel tank breather valve, but that doesn't reassure me when I fill the car up, and it smells more strongly of petrol than the garage forecourt. It's worse when the tank is full, and can not be smelt at all from inside with the windows closed.

Is this normal?

I think from memory this means that the breather pipe itself is perished. Would be worth checking it.
