Right I knew this would need to be done sooner or later but I was hoping for later! But the other day I gave my sills the once over and they feel extremely crunchy and with obvious patchy paintwork pointing to some bodge repairs, I took some photos of the insides and while they are not as bad as some photos posted here they do look like they will need some attention! So I have got some inner sills that I got off ebay a while ago for a good price and I have just bought some outer sill panels, obviously the ebay style but I think they should be fine and give the right look.
So the reason for this post is that while I have googled the process involved could someone that has diy'ed this give me some tips? I'm not to worried having restored the original rot box that is a triumph spitfire but I don't really want to collapse the car! I presume remove the door, brace it, cut out the outer, inner, replace inner, treat metalwork, fit outer panel then paint.
Now this sounds right but i'm sure it wont be that simple but if there is a bunch of photos showing the process I would appreciate the link as I only want to do it once!

Check out the other tread that's currently running 2 see what the genuine ones look like.

If your not going oem out side and decide not 2 on the inside MIT be Intersted in the inneed, but I don't think I need them yet.

I tip I got was 2 jack the car up via the wheels. So it take the strain off the body. Also the acid left behind after a weild that cause the rust at a later date.

Interesting about the jacking from the wheels, and I bloody well hope it isn't as bad as those photos :shock: but I did just offer the replacements up and I must say the profile is quite good!
I think I will be taking lots of pictures as there does seem to be a void in this kind of diy.

I had a poke around my sills the other day ,the outer skin on the inside looks crusty but the inners look absolutly fine ,

a digital camera on a timer shoved down the hole/vent in the door shut is a good method to have a good look inside

I have heard scare stories of £1500 per side for sill repair.
I assume that this is for cherished cars including paint etc.

Any idea what a basic repair to get it through an mot would be?

Just got the outer sill on the passanger side of my S2 patched up for my mot for £150. No paint though just primer but the job looks pretty good. I didn't get it painted because half of the car really looks like it is needing a respray and I plan to sell the car as a project once I get my 928 back on the road.

Now all this is subject to what I fully discover when I cut the outers off, but after taking photos of the insides it looks like...
Ebay sill kit £120
Inner sills £20 (massively cheep of ebay when they where miss listed)
Mig wire £5
Filler £15
Paint £60
Bits and bobs £30
So £250 all in for both sides (I have most tools and said bits and bobs) now I am doing all this myself and I reckon it'll take a weekend per side taking it steady but I have restored a triumph spitfire where I'm pretty sure I replaced more panels than that where left of the original but it was a good learning curve I never want to repeat!
Now my next topic on here may be "how do I rescue this" but I just like the satisfaction of doing things like this myself and I get the benifit of knowing that no rust was left in there!
But I really don't understand these £1500 per side quotes, now I know a good paint man is well worth it but at the end of the day most of the sills are covered in stone chip paint so it doesn't need to be a glass like finish, but again if I was doing a nut and bolt rebuild on this I doubt I'd be painting it myself but as I'm not and this is a fun weekend toy to be used I will be happy with I'm aiming for.

I paid about £130 to have them patched to go through an MOT. They are solid (except the base of the front wing which wasnt done) but not all that pretty.

Still on the road though :)

I heard that primer will absorb moisture, so if you are leaving it like that for a while and don't want your car to rot you might want to paint it.
Just what I was told, but I trust the opinion of the chap who told me.
