Hi there, been checking a VIN on a V5C form against the one physically on the car I'm looking at and there appears to be a difference with a Z instead of a 2 and a G instead of a 6. The rest of the number is fine. Is this a quirk of porsches? |

It appears to be a quirk of someones intellect! On a 944 it should read something like WPOzzz94zGN400001. The Zs are fillers on a European VIN and the G in this example is a year code signifying a 1986 model year (Sept. 1985-Aug. 1996 build) car. WPO = Porsche's manufacturer code zzz = filler 94---4 = the model (92---4, 93---1, 95---1, 96---8) z = filler G = model year identifier (1980 = A, 1981 = B etc) N = build plant (N = Neckarsulm, S = Stuttgart) 4 = already explained 00001 = the series production number If the number on your car doesnt follow this format then they have made a clerical error. Better rectified at your local VRO whilst it is still open. Simon |

I see this a lot with the DVLA data being incorrect, especially there being WPO222 instead of the correct WPOZZZ among other problems, we notice it more because our invoicing software is connected with DVLA/VOSA and auto inputs chassis numbers and car details as you enter the registration number, so quite often we see the inaccuracies, but to anyone who has noticed it, or might enforce it, will not be to worried about it, as everyone including the police and VOSA know that the number on the system for most older cars would have originally be entered from hand written data on a form filled in by a main dealer. |

Had a similar problem with my previous 944, an S2 Cab where VIN label didn't match DVLA V5c documentation :- The WP0ZZZ94 part was ok but the following ZLN was 2LN on DVLA documentation; also the issue date was 30/10/04 and should have been 13/10/04 (misheard as Thirty) . Two manual entry errors that needed sorting out with DVLA before I purchased the Vehicle. |
