hey guys, saz's porker is suffering a noisy box which i thought was the thrust bearing, the noise comes from the back and imitates a noisy thrust bearing, any ideas?

also do these engines suffer ring wear? or is it simply valve guide seals?

The gearboxes are V noisy, they chatter & clatter away, fold the seats down, remove the rear mat & you'll think it's about to fall out!

Oil consumption is normally ring wear, mine used hard does around 150 miles to the litre of oil which is 2 stroke levels. Driven gently (ish) it hardly uses any. It'll need glaze busting & re-ringing. Rebores are expensive & on a 2.5 it's easier to find another motor.

ahh i can do the glaze bustin, are these nickle plated bores or is that the later versions?

'boxes can be very noisey and whiney and run for years, maybe worth changing oil for swepco as this can quieten things. engines suffer from top end wear, also rings wear, but worse than that bores can get scored and are coated with nikasil which is a type of hardening, so if the bores are scored its time for an engine swap

They are Alusil & rebores need special treatment after to get the surface finish back.
All 944's are Alusil.

My gearbox has the usual whine and I have just bought a 944 s2 box that I have been told is alot quieter and gears are smooth.I will have it fitted in the next week or 2 so should be intresting?

Fitted my s2 gearbox this week at work (in my lux model) and Iam soooo pleased with the result .I now have a much quieter box with no whines and a smoother gear change too.
Well worth the investment of a second hand s2 box as the whine was the only thing that used to anoy me about my 944.

I now have an S2 LSD box sitting in the garage for mine when the engine goes in. Interesting that it's quieter as I believe they're the same design.

My old LUX was noisy as hell but the box in my 951 is very quiet indeed. Maybe the oil cooler has saved it over the years.

I bought mine on recommendation that they are a quieter,smoother box with a quicker pull away ratio(not too bothered) and if the figures are correct the ratios at 5th speed may return slightly better fuel consumption.
I certainlt find it quieter and smoother gear change than the previous box,mind you I dont know how knackered my old one was by comparison

Is an S2 'box a straight swap with a 85.5 ( oval dash ) 944 Lux 8v or are their ' complications ' to be got around please ?

I'm interested to know the definitive answer to this, the drive shafts have different part no's ?

I can guarantee that the s2box goes straight into the oval dash 944 (mine is 1986 2.5 lux) with no problems.

I agree I have a turbo box in my lux at the moment, soon to be swapped for an s2 box as the ratios are just a bit too long.
