As per the subject line. See attached pics. The paint has gone underneath (blasted stone chip magnet this car  )Is the bubble the first obvious sign of rot or am I just being paranoid? Cheers, Adam ETA: It looks a bit mre obvious in the flesh sorry.

its an easy enough job and doesn't require a complete sil so you could request the body shop/garage piece it up (with metal). prob charge you a day or so to do it with the paint, again it depends on the place you take it. |

See if you can scrape it back to clean bare metal. If thats the case you should be able to etch prime it, stone chip it and paint over it. |

Thanks for advice guys. I'm really just looking for a confirmation that there is actually a problem at the mo, and as I am not experienced/confident with bodywork I would be taking it to a reputable bodyshop to be sorted. |

If you can see it from the outside, there is a problem inside that might be worse. Best bet is to pull the black vent out (inside the door-pillar above the rusty bit) and shine a torch down. You can easily see the extent of the spread, and it's no huge job to spray corrosion inhibitor into the sill from here. The important thing is to stop it getting further, as this is taking many cars off the road as they start to fail MOT on corrosion around rear suspension and seat belt mounts. Also, take the front wheel-arch liners out, clean the bottoms of the wings and protect. |

Right, popped off the vents and so far as I can tell it's clean enuff to eat yer dinner off in there. However, I need to try and get some pictures of the sill along it's length before I can really put my mind at rest. Looking underneath the car I did find a small hole in the sill bottom (one of the drain holes I guess) but it's fairly obviously been treated and painted in the not too distant past so not too scary. The paint has gone soft where stone chipped away (see above pics) so that is probably why the paint seems to be lifting near the join with the rear panel. All in all it was probably just paranoia setting in after reading so many horror stories!

Adam, I know you're not at club night Friday but let a few of us have a nose at Gaydon. I can bring my BIG screwdriver to have a real good dig if you want

All we'd need is a long extension lead

Ye gads no, there won't be anyone attacking me sills just yet  Seriously, now I've had a poke with a screwdriver it's not as bad as I feared. Jim I'll try and make it friday night but if I can't I might just drop by your gaff on my way home from work one of these fine sunny days if you want to have a butchers at it. Colt if we see each other at Gaydon I'd appreciate your opinion on them too. Cheers, Adam |
