Hi All

I took my S2 in for an MOT on Friday (in the snow, well slush mostly) at the OPC and she passed. Yay! :D

I got an advisory that the front brakes only just met the front brake imbalance (20%) and require adjustment or repair. The service manager suggested it would likely be plate lift, which I've read a little bit about, and quoted for the worst case scenario, which would include discs and pads.

I was wondering what the best case scenario might be? I'm mechanically challenged, but my brother is very handy (replaced the handbrake shoes for me last year), so is this something a home mechanic could tackle? I'm planning a trip to JMG in May/June for a front end overhaul and will likely ask Jon to have a look at the same time if not.

I'd appreciate your thoughts, and maybe an indicative cost Jon if you're here?

definitely something you and your brother can sort out.Could be plate lift or a sticking piston or air in the system.Could be it needs discs and pads.There are postings on here I am sure about how to tackle the job if not try PCGB site.

When was the brake fluid last changed?

It could simply be bad fluid, which also lubricates the pistons and seals, which are causing some binding up on one or more of the seals.

If it is slider plates they can cause a lack of braking performance, a brake imbalance, or even brake binding... or any combination of these faults.

We typically charge £100 per calliper, which includes removal of the pads, the calliper, removal of the slider plate fasteners (this is the really hard bit), refurbishing the original slider plates, cleaning up the calliper behind the plates, repainting that area with etch primer and a high temperature black paint, fitting the slider plates with new fasteners and reinstalling on the car with the original pads.

Only extra is a brake fluid bleed and new pads or disks if people want them doing at the same time.

The fluid was last changed June 2010 (about 3k miles ago :oops: )
If it's OK with you I'll ask you to have a look when I bring the car down for service/overhaul in May/June, which I've been talking to Jamie about.
Do you have details of local accommodation you could let me have please? Is there any time I should avoid due to your move?

Just what Jon said.

I had this with my 2.5. It was remedied by a combination of caliper rebuild with new seals, new pads and spanking fresh fluid.

In may or june we will be in the new workshop in Ferndown, about 5 miles north of Poole, Bournemouth or Christchurch..

Clive with the red 944 turbo from this forum that comes down from lincolnshire every year swears by a B&B just around the corner from the current workshop in Christchurch where there is a fair amount to see and do, as there is in Bournemouth or even Poole.

Ferndown is a relatively decent sized sub town of Bournemouth, but can be a bit dull if you are around for more than a day. But has regular bus routes to Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. Which is why we are kitting out our new customer lounge in the new workshop with plenty of nice things to keep someone from being bored or uncomfortable.

If your down for a couple of days or more, I would probably recommend staying in Christchurch or Bournemouth, depending on your age and interests... for someone into night clubs, bars and the 8 miles of beaches, then Bournemouth is the place, for peace, quiet and history, christchurch is awesome... For anyone down for a day or more, I would seriously recommend pre booking a courtesy car with us and visiting the national motor museum in the new forrest, absolutely amazing, including the James bond cars, top gear cars, F1 cars and plenty to keep a petrol head interested for a whole day.
