Post subject:  Help - Clutch pedal mounting loose

I've just developed a scary little fault in my S2.

When I push the clutch pedal down I can feel a heavy clunk through the pedal, if I am braking at the same time the clunk is also felt through the brake pedal. I've laid upside down in the footwell and can see the black metal mount for the pedal and brake is loose and moves when the clutch is pressed. It appears to be held in place by a 13mm nut (marked yellow) in the picture below but if I try to nip it up it is already completely tight? :?

Anyone know if the bolt comes out in the engine bay somewhere as I can't see it myself?

There is more than 1 nut holding that bracket on, make sure the rest of them are tight. Or take it over to dove house, Im guessing they are local to you?

Thanks Lar. Yes the other two nuts are nice and tight, totally solid - it's the other end of the bracket that moves.

I have done some more investigating (its tight and uncomfortable down there :? ) and its as if there should be a spacer between that bracket and the firewall. The nut is done up tight (you can see the yellow factory paint is unbroken) and the stud is still attached to the firewall which is 100% solid, yet the bracket sits a couple of mm proud and moves unnervingly when you press the clutch.

I shall try to undo the nut and put a spacer behind unless anyone else has any ideas

Oops, I missed this one.

There are 4 plastic bushes that the clutch and brake pedal pivot on, if any of those are broken (they can break up and fall out) then it can make the clutch or brake pedal wobble, kink over and all kinds of things which will make it seem like the whole bracket is broken or loose.

The bad news is that you could do with taking out the bracket assembly to take a look at all the bushes.

My advice is take out the drivers seat and lay down on your back in the footwell, much more comfortable, albeit with your legs pointing up in the air.

Thanks Jon, I'll have another look without the discomfort of the seats digging in my back

Hi there, did you ever fix this problem? My 88 944 just developed exactly the same thing!

Lug holding in bottom bolt came away from firewall. I had it re-welded, tightened up all the screws, and now it shifts an eighth inch every time I press the clutch.
