oh dear :?

last night my car has started to make the kind of sound you get when you're brake pads wear through.

the noise comes from the drivers side rear. metal on metal type squealing noise. not so load you'd notice if the windows are up.

i've not managed to have a look at it yet but i don't think it is worn/sticking pads as the noise doesn't change in pitch when the brakes are applied/car speeds up.

its pretty much constant but stops just before i bring the car to a standstill?

will have a good look later this afternoon...just wondered if anyone could suggest what it might be?

thanks people,

rick.

Brake backplate broken loose, not unknown. Stone trapped in calliper?

If you can't see anything in the rear caliper check the hand brake assembly. I've had a spring that hold one of the shoes on brake, the shoe touched the drum, eventually wore out and finally started squealing. It was only about £20 for a new set of springs from OPC and of course the new shoes.

thanks for the input guys, i'l check that lot out! hope it is something simple 8)

if it was something making contact with the disc/hand brake wouldn't the noise get worse when braking force is applied? (tried both hand brake and foot brake-no change in noise)

it seems to remain all most constant until it disappears suddenly very low speeds.

very odd.

I agree with Dave. One of the handbrake springs has snapped and is squealing away inside the rear disk hub
