When 2 jmg inpection, ( thanks once again )

Which pointed out a few things. Which I'm hoping I can do myself a home on the road.
Rear wheel bearing need replacing.
Drive shaft oi seal ( where it meets the gear box )
So MIT as well do the rubber boots and new grease and bolts e.c.t

Iv heard BMW 5 series use the same bearings, could be cheaper sourced at that part no

However would rather used a know source then end up with a cheap quilty.

Will try Jmg tmw,
But so far Iv found prices
£45 pro max
£65 Frazer parts

I'm thinking off heating the arm institute and removing the bearing with a bearing puller or something simmler.

Thanks

I have never changed the rear bearing but if I remember right the locknut is torqued up very tight so hard to break loose 300lbft or so I think. When mine need doing I will give it to my local garage who did the fronts for me as they have the tools to do it.

I did the rear bearing on my early car recently and from what I've heard is the easier of the two. The later cars with aluminium swing arms are supposed to be more of a pig.

Either way I still had to visit a local Porsche specialist with mine in order to get the hub nut torqued up correctly as my torque wrench ran out at 150lbft instead of the mighty >300 required.

Knuckle bar, scaffold pole & jump on it! Dependent on body weight is how long the bar needs to be!

Thanks, I'm 80kg. Read you can free the nut by dropping the weight off the car with a jack. Getting it undone shouldn't be 2 bad. Is the nut reusable ? Is 300lb a lot 2 get done back up 2 or is it just the same, plently off leaverage?

My plan is 2 heat up the arm, then extract with a bearing puller. I would like 2 keep the arm on if possabile. Spoke 2 a few people today one meothed was wielding the bearing which stinks it.

Promax seem 2 be the cheapest do far, not had jmg price yet

Design 911 was cheaper then ecp on the same bearing and design 911 came as a kit with new circlip.

Most garages are asking £500 2 do the job if all go well. so if it takes me 3days I will still be saving.

Bruce Arnn sells a tool for this job and has a write up here on using it:

Clark's Garage has this too:

Thanks,

will a bearing puller work as well as this tool?

I had imaged a tool mounted 2 the hub, with a threaded bar in the middle off the bearing used 2 pull the peace fixed 2 hub, resulting in the bearing been pulled out as the bar is winded though.

Would like 2 get everything in place 2 attemp the job sat.

I just replaced the rear wheels today. I started at home working on the road side. Got a bit stuck removing the drive shaft bolts. So I gave up and Took the car 2 garge and worked along side them. I removed both drive shalf and re packed the cv joints with fresh grease after remove as much off the old grease as possable. Replaced the one off the gear box oil seals and drained the gear box and replaced with 75/90 oil

With the driveshaft out I was able 2 knock the hub out, which took half the bearing with it, leaving just the bottom race, this was weild then knocked out, heated the arm up and the frozen bearing just dropped in.

Hand brake spring have snapped on one side so Iv got no handbrake at the mo.

I turned up at the garge at 1 and left at 8.

Car was fine 4 about 20miles, the bearing noise was gone and everything was quite. Then I started getting a knocking noise. Which is more aparnt when turning left, but can be heard when going straight.

I spoke with the mercanic who did the work with me. He thinks the driveshaft is worn, and has seated in a slightly differnt postion then before or maybe instoled the other way round.

So seems like I need new driveshaft or at least cv joints at each end.

Any sirguestion or thoughts?

What bearing did you use?

What torque did you tighten the wheel bearing up to?

Did the driveshafts go back in the same orientation end to end that they came out as?

The reason for the 3rd one, when driveshafts on 944's start getting noisey, some people just swap them round so the inner becomes the outer and the outer becomes the inner, which then shuts them up for another few thousand miles... someone might have done this in the past and you putting them in another orientation as highlighted the wear in them.

Sfn or some thing like that made in Italy. On the bearing not the box.

More then likely the drive shafts have been replaced differnt 2 how they came off, but I thought they MIT just be out side in the inside rather then swapped left 2 right.

Driveshaft bolts were 47lb torque as per hand book and hub nut was 370lb

Looks like Iv going 2 need new driveshafts. If you could pm me a price.

Thanks

Did you use new driveshaft bolts? They are meant to be one time use only, they are technically stretch bolts?
Having got that far I'd have stripped, cleaned & relubed the CVs. One of mine was very knackered but not that noisy. It sounds like a CV is gone.

What was written on the box?

Please don't say it was one of the cheap "also fits BMW" ones?

I tend to stick with GKN for the wheel bearings that are the ones of the right specification for the 944. The BMW ones have a lower loading specification.

But your current issue does sound like a driveshaft problem.

Wheels bearings came from pro max, was £45 a peace next day delivery was £6.50 got 12 bolts 2 main nuts and the drive shaft seal delivered £118, ordered at 4pm was here the next day. Im sure jon would off offered a price macth, e.c.t but i would felt rude 2 ask. Was informed they where a high end type. Got 12 new bolts as I was only expecting 2 change the half stubs.
