Hi, has anyone any experience of fitting one the above to a 944S2? Does the S2 have a mechanical cable drive from the gearbox?
If so does anyone know if the Brantz gearbox adaptors fit?
Can anyone tell me what thread is used on the gearbox end of the cable (if it has one!!!)is it M18,or M20?
Thanks

Series one cars use a cable drive from the nearside front wheel, but series two cars (inc all S2s) use a hall effect sensor mounted on the transaxle.

I had this very problem just last week. I've got a Brantz 2 to go into my early '82 Lux, still trying to work out how to do it.

As far as I can work out:

Speedo sensor - not going to work as the cable is sealed up properly, can't take a feed off the ends, works off the front hub.

Gearbox sensor - I don't think there is a suitable outlet from the transaxle.

Hall Sensor for driveshaft or prop - again not going to work.

Wheel Probe Sensor - this is about the only option I think. HOWEVER - the Brantz wheel sensors don't work on pre-2004 Brantz tripmeters and, I think I'm right in saying, the MSA Blue Book and FIA will not allow wheel sensors anyway.

AAAAARGH.

I have a Brantz 2 Pro in my DS and we got that to work by butchering the speedo cable. At the cluster it is the standard kit, the middle section if from Maserati and this is where we take the feed, then grafted back to the normal DS cable on the other side. Kind of a Maserati sandwich.

Does an ABS sensor work with the Brantz?

If so, and if you are increasing the power in a pre 86 944, it may be worth retrofitting the S2 non M030 or late turbo M030 hubs and brakes and then you will get two benefits.. improved braking and ABS sensor rings on the hubs and the hubs will probably still have ABS sensors in them ready to wire into the Brantz

Sadly not Jon, only the 4 options I list above.

I would probably recommend machining one of the transmission output flanges with teeth and mount a 944 s2 hall sensor (or other hall sensor) to read it. Possibly the easiest and cheapest method.

Do you need to use a set number of pulses per rev of the driveshaft?

No, it doesn't need a set number of pulses though the more the better (or more accurate.)

When you calibrate a brantz you select '100' on the unit and then drive a mile (or a kilometer). You then back enter the readout (essentially how many pulses you;ve read over that time) and then you are good to go.

The Brantz unit itself is very good and reliable provided it gets a good feed.

Hi, just about to do my first rally in my 968. I've bought a second hand Brantz but can't figure out which sensor I need to fit. Any advice please ?

Why dont you fabricate a bracket that mounts the sensor so it can use the driveshaft bolts at the gearbox end ?

All oval dash cars have an electronic speedo. The sensor is in the transaxle. You should be able to pick up a signal from it using a Brantz pre scaling interface. I had a Brantz International 2 in my Jeep and it was excellent.

As the gents said above you have the perfect solution on the S2/968 in the hall sensor off the box.

Brantz are a fabbo firm to deal with, very helpful. Have a look at the site and then give them a call.

Also - what rally are you doing in the 968? Good to see someone else getting a 'different' Porsche out on the lanes/gravel.

Thank you for your assistance gentlemen, help is on it's way . I'm entered in the MSA Spring Classic starting 25th April, not particularly hard, but looking forward to it all the same. This year they are accepting cars 1994 and earlier so my 968 Sport just scrapes in !

Cheers,
Tony.
