The unbent ones will have a market. I've straightened bent valves in the past & checked them with a V Block with a clock but I'm not sure I'd chance it on a Porsche. |

We have not found it too hard this year, but to be honest I think people such as the breakers yards and individuals know we buy them, so they tend to call us, so maybe they are just finding me. |

Maybe though you did say recently you were buying the whole car to get the engine. 968 short engines seem rarer than 2.7 heads. |

Oh absolutely, we have a 944 2.7 auto we bought earlier this year and it was absolutely mint. We paid £400 for it, the owner insisted that it was destroyed if he sold it to us, because he found when he tried to sell it that it was a category C right off.. We tried to explain that this was not the end of the world, but he was sure he wanted the car destroyed.. So we bought it. If it was a 2.5 lux we would not have been interested at £400, simply because we do not have any call for the parts (or rarely), but we knew the car would pay for itself with what we could sell, and leave us with a 3.0 block and 2.7 head for free, so thats why we bought it. Having said that, I would pay for a 2.7 head, a 2.7/3.0 block, and a 3.0 crank, and on balance we would buy a scrap 2.7 if it came up again for the same money. 2.7 lux 944's come up on ebay from time to time without an MOT or with a blown gearbox or even engine, if the price is right we would buy one for what we need, but I would probably stop short of buying a £1500 to £2000 2.7 lux just for the head or block. To be honest though, when you think that putting a 3.0 into a 944 turbo is kind of taking the car away from being a 944 turbo anymore, and if you are changing the brakes and suspension, along with fitting an aftermarket LSD and getting the bodywork perfect.. It does make it viable to buy a 2.7 lux and turn the whole car into a 3.0 turbo by adding turbo wings, front bumper and rear diffuser... To be honest, lots of people with 3.0 turbos upgrade all the turbo specific bits in the rest of the car anyway, so a really mint 2.7 may be a viable project car. |

Yes and when I see a good S2 go for peanuts I often think it would make a good base for a 3.0 turbo. Whatever you start with though it's not going to be cheap and I wonder how many people are still willing to spend big on a 944 when they could just buy a Monaro or RS Audi. |

What we find is the people who spend big on 944's have a pretty limitless budget. There seems to be a new kind of modified 944 turbo owner out there, sometimes with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cars in their collections. I think part of it is there is a certain demographic, where people were at a formative age in the 80's and 90's and had someone in their life who had a 944 or 944 turbo who they looked up to.. it could have been their boss, an uncle who knows, but it seems that in later life when this person had "made it" in life, they want that same car, but realise that time has marched on and an amazing power figure in the 80's is not so amazing now... So they want the performance to be increased to give them the "wow factor" they craved in the 80's when they didnt have the money to own the car back then. The other kind of customer we are finding for this kind of car is someone who has quite new GT3's and GT2's that have come in for work, and enquired about "Those funny 944 Porsche things", we have explained how they can be tuned, they have done their own research and come back asking us to build one. You would think that these kinds of people would be on the forums and part of the community, but there are some people with truly amazing 944's that are completely out of the loop community wise, and some are quite public figures who you would be amazed to learn have a tuned 944 turbo. It is not just confined to the 944 market though... A local Rolls Royce dealer I know has a MK2 escort that he has spent tens of thousands of pounds on building the car he wanted in the 80's but could not afford to build back then.. this car has an original BDA engine that alone in worth thousands of pounds, a car where the shell prep, suspension, driveline have all cost him thousands, he may even have spent as much as it costs to prepare a world rally car in building his version of a 1970's rally car out of which was at one point a 1100cc shopping car from the 70's. Its a funny old business |

Back in the 80's I bought and sold a few MK 1 and 2 RS Escorts, 3.0/2.8 Capri's and Stags, lost money on every one of course ![]() |
