I have a suspicion one or both of my ball joints may be worn.Is there a diy way of checking to see the condition of them?

Jack up the car, have the steering lock off, and turn the wheel from lock to lock hard against the stops with a friend watching the balljoint. You can also get a lever bar in there and try to move the hub relative to the joint in several directions, and between the road and the tyre (with the car lifted a bit) and bumping the wheel up.

Sometimes you will only see a problem in one of these tests.
