Jack up the car, have the steering lock off, and turn the wheel from lock to lock hard against the stops with a friend watching the balljoint. You can also get a lever bar in there and try to move the hub relative to the joint in several directions, and between the road and the tyre (with the car lifted a bit) and bumping the wheel up.
Sometimes you will only see a problem in one of these tests.
