Post subject:  Car insurance!!

I've been insured with Egg (part of the Direct Line conglomerate) for about six years. The annual renewal has just turned up....

I told the schoolgirl on the so-called 'renewal helpline' to stick to the basic premium and the no-claims protection premium, because if they add it all in with the rescue and uninsured loss recovery fees (neither of which have increased) then the actual increase looks smaller.

29% (twenty nine) increase in the basic premium
128% (one hundred and twenty eight) increase in the no claims protection premium.

The only answer the child could give is that "it's system generated". She accused me of 'appreciating' that the insurance had gone up. I pointed out that one 'appreciates' a gift, one never 'appreciates' being charged more than they have previously been charged for the same thing.

In the end I just gave up because she was way out of her depth.... and anyway she had some homework to be getting on with.

As the S2 is now a 3rd car I'm going to put it onto classic car insurance - but I'm at a loss where to start. In the past I've had the CVI thing where they don't actually give you a quote, so am dreading getting classic car insurance sorted out.

I'm 53, loads of no-claims bonus, no points, expect to do maximum 5000 miles a year.

Any ideas 'appreciated', no really, I mean it :)

Thanks

Just looking at insurance myself for a 928. If it is your only car then you are limited with classic insurance, needtoinsure are the only ones I could find to do it. If it is your second car then you should have lots of options and I'm sure someone will be along with advice. Either way I would try giving needtoinsure a phone.

loyal customers get ripped off, on my last automatic renewal the price was going up by over £100 so i went online for a better quote, yep £100 cheaper from the same insurance company!! now i always go on go compare, compare the meercat and direct line. my 944 s2 is £180 fully comp, protected no claims, no limited milage.
if you do go on a classic car policy after 2 or 3 years you will loose of your no claims bonus and your premium will go up a lot when you go back to a normal policy.

I think I went via the Meercat, who further directed me to Performance Direct, which is another broker. I ended up with a company so small I haven't even heard of them, but it's only £160 / year, 3000 miles, fully comp. I'm 32 with lots of no claims and a few little points on my licence. The 944 is my 2nd vehicle.

John,

I've just insured my square dash 2.5lux with Lancaster (MKG is the insurance company from memory). I'm of a similar age to you and insured it on a 5000 mile comprehensive Classic policy wich includes legal, windscreen, foreign travel and recovery/home start for the princely sum of £139!

My wife is also covered and the policy excludes commuting or work based activities oh and the car has to be garaged overnight. Still a lot better than Carole Nash where I had previously insured and who wanted nearly £300 for the same cover but with a £150 bigger excess!

Like yours, mine is a 3rd car so I can live with social, domestic & pleasure cover for the savings it delivers

Here's my 2pence worth
Rather than fill in umpteen online forms, or ring for a quote I put all my details in an e-mail - It's been an annual ritual to send it to numerous companies, probably tried 10 or so over the years with latest prices varying from £258 to £530 :-
Heres my latest list

Adrian flux quotes@adrianflux.co.uk
AON (Royal & Sun alliance) :- ?
RH Specialist Cars division:- specialistcardivision@equitygroup.co.uk
Carole Nash:- Chaucer cars@carolenash.com
Classic Line:- info@classiclineinsurance.co.uk
Heritage Insurance :- quote@norton-ib.co.uk
Peart :- insurance@peart.co.uk

Peter D.James Limited :- info@peterjamesinsurance.co.uk
2010 £258.40
2011 £269.39
2012 £277.51

I have previously been with Carole Nash, AON, & Peart, but changed to Peter D.James Ltd. Jan 2010
Fully Comp - Classic (Garaged!) Unlimited Mileage, Commuting (not required as I'm retired but its included in the policy), Breakdown cover included (also not required as I am with Caravan Club Mayday, for Towing etc which covers both my cars). £150 excess. £14,000 agreed value. Excellent I think for a tastefully modified 944 Turbo.
The actual insurers are Equity Red Star (the same as some of the others above) so its well worth the effort in shopping around saved me well over £250/yr!

Help

John, ring Classicline. Id expect your premium to be around £125-£175 for 3,000-5,000 miles, perhaps a good deal less. My postcode isnt the best and 5kPA costs under £200 (for a 1988 Turbo) with free UK rescue.

Ive paid £150 for 3kPA and I can increase it at any time simply by paying the difference!

No one else comes close, in my experience.

I was in such a rush that Ive omitted to mention (or to consider, actually), that that is for a 944 Turbo, so theyll be FAR cheaper for a normally aspirated car.

I'm with Simon - Just renewed with Classicline. My renewal came through at £280 with CVI snd Classicline quoted £207, CVI then equalled it which I wasnt too happy they could knock £73 off just like that.

Agreed value
£100 excess
3k miles garaged
Breakdown cover.

I've gone back to CVI. My renewal from RH classic was cheaper but no agreed value.

£100 excess
Agreed value
3K miles (including commuting - I use it occasionally on the better days)
Garaged
Breakdown cover

£175

I've never gone too far wrong with Lancaster for classic policies.

I'm 29, work in industrial automation as a sales engineer and pay £109 for my 86 lux, that is garaged and on a >5000 mile policy. They have always been highly competitive for me!

Just renewed....
944 Turbo

28 years old
own 3 cars
944 is used on commuting, 7500k limit (might increase this)
mods listed include roll bar, engine performance etc
7 years NCB
No points (at last!)
Girlfriend insured (younger with accident on record)

Tried lots of stuff and no joy with it (flux, lancaster etc etc) ended up with Admiral and found that the insurance got cheaper by having no alarm (handy as it doesn't have one) and parked on the street rather than on the driveway!!

10months policy (gains a years NCB) for £490 which with mods and commuting use I thought pretty good!

Post subject:  Re: Car insurance!!

Some great info, thank you.

I'm going to take a bit of time and do some research. I'll do 'normal' insurance quotes but with restricted mileage, and 'classic' quotes.

I used to do 20k a year in the car, but between MOTs this time it's only done 8K. Now my wife has bought me an Audi A4 Avant it's being used even less - just 14 miles in the last month... a waste. I'll use 5000 as the mileage. The car is generally kept on the driveway.

I'll do the comparison sites for the normal quotes - and then contact the actual provider directly.

I think that Clive's idea of e-mailing all the classic insurers on one bulk e-mail is a good one, so will do that with all the ones that have been mentioned.

I'll come back with results as it's so frustrating when people ask for help and then never update the thread to finish it off.

Thanks again.

:) Brilliant!

I use Lancaster insurance for my turbo. (http://www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk/) No one comes close to them price wise for me.

Had to make a claim once a long time ago and there were no problems at all at any stage in the process. They were also the cheapest by far when I first insured an S2 years ago.

good luck...
