Speed sensor bolt question

Post subject:  Speed sensor bolt question
I'm trying to take the speed sensor off the top of the engine, does anyone know what tool fits the cap head bolt attaching it to the engine ?

I can't see if it's an allen key or a spline key, don't want to damage the head the haynes manual just says allen bolt but it said that about the drive shafts and they turned out to be splined.

It's an allen bolt, can't remember what size off the top of my head though. Later cars have a hex bolt there instead.

Once you've got the bolt out don't expect it to pull out easily though, they get pretty stuck. I had to give mine a good wiggle from side to side whilst pulling out before it would let go.

Thanks for that, I struggled to get an allen key in there mainly because its in a tight space.

I'll try again using a 6mm allen key.

These fixings often need "waking up" otherwise they will tend to round or sheer off.

A few tips
Use a allen key hex bit that fits in a socket, not one that is a traditional L-Shaped Allen key
Put the allen hex bit on an extension, so you can use the ratchet from above
Hit the extension with a hammer to fully seat the allen bit into the head of the fastener before you undo it.

The shock from hitting the extension will not only seat the bit deep into the cap of the fastener, it will also send a shock wave through the threads which will unstick the threads making it less likely to sheer.

Thanks for your advice the whole job as been like that seized bolts and fasteners I felt like I'd been hit by a truck the next day :!: strained muscles I never knew I had it don't help laying under a car sitting on axle stands :( oh I wish I had a ramp or a pit

I didn't have a lift for a few years at one point, a lot of the work was in pit lane garages as well, so only mobile tools.. I keep telling the younger lads that work for me that they do not know they are born.

I actually think some of the younger lads think I am exaggerating when I mention dropping transmissions onto my chest under a Porsche and then having to roll/lift them down to the ground next to me on a bare concrete floor.. Then again, I was built more like Arnie back then without using a gym!

Well done though, once you are done, nothing will be able to stop you!
