Finally a break from drought conditions ....I wrapped up working from home this evening at 7.15 and pulled the 944 out from the garage into a clear and dry evening - something of a rarity this year!
Fortunately, living in Crawley I'm only five minutes from the Sussex countryside. Off came the roof panel and on with the heater....the early cars may have poorer ventilation but they have much better heat distribution to your toes
...shame it's mid-May and I still need it to keep the evening chill out of the cabin.The next hour was brilliant, I worked the car over 45+ quick miles on a mixture of dual carriageways and fast B roads. Not going mad, all legal and above board officer
Even at 30 years old, the pace and fluidity of the car is still simply amaizing. I haven't been able to use the car much over the past few years (only about 80 miles last year) so at the start of the drive, things felt a little stiff and awkward. But as the miles racked up and the drive progressed, I could feel the life coming back into the old girl. Everything smoothed out and the whole car felt years younger than it's real age.
You really can feel that this car is something special. It hides it's fairly basic underpinnings very well considering the suspension is a hybrid of Golf and Beetle Cast offs!
This is the very reason I bought the car all those years ago......and I've made a real commitment to get out and enjoy the car as much as possible this year....drought allowing of course.
Long live the 944!
