Post subject: | Dropping the auto transmission help please |
I've began replacing my flex plate and I'm trying to drop the transmission out I'm nearly there but I have a few questions before I go any further. I'm trying to release the shifter cable from the auto box and I can't get the ball and socket to seperate I've got the wire locking pin out but can't prise the two apart I don't want to use too much force and break anything as the arm is flexing under strain, would it help if I take the tension off the cable and if so how. or is the socket just seized on with rust and grime ? In the halfords book it states to drop the transmission I need to undo the 3 mounting bolts each side but looking at it surely I just need to release the one bolt on each side securing it to the chassis as the two side bolts attach the mountings to the trani box, and do the bolts to the chassis have a nut on the top under the carpet as the bolt just seems to spin. Thanks for your help Lee |

I think you can just undo the nut and take off the whole linkage, trying to pop the ball joint if it does not want to play risks breaking the ball cup. With the engine mounts, undo them from the bodywork/cross-member, rather than the box. |

With a bit of brute force and a soak in wd40 the gear linkage came apart and I undid the bolts going into the cross member so the box is now dropped just got to concentrate on getting the flex plate out now which seems to involve taking lots of bits apart on the engine. This flexplate job is hardwork ![]() |

oops... Did I mention "leave the torque converter connected to the transmission"??? If not, put it back onto the transmission and be really careful when you do, treat it as if it is full of Nitro-glycerine, that way you are less likely to damage the seals. |

I think I left the torque converter on, the transmission came away at the thin black metal plate, in the Haynes manual is says to leave it on using some 4" strips of metal bolted to the case the picture in the manual is very poor but I'm sure I did it the right way. |
