Not sure what to make of this, its listed as an s2, chassis 0001, with 'porsche fitted' one off tailgate (strosek) and a 2 litre engine. Oh, its £25k. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1988-Porsche-944-Special-Edition-S2-Chassis-0001-Only-82-miles-/260979223273?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3cc392eae9

It has only done 82 miles from brand new and is still on the original factory fitted tyres with a chassis number of 0001 !

I bet it is still on the factory fitted belt too!

Strange rear hatch. Probably no rear seats.
American spec, judging by the goofy rear bumpers. I believe these were slower due to stricter emissions requirements.
Hopefully eBay automatically put in the wrong engine size. I can't imagine any 944 only having a 2000cc engine.
You would want to change those "original tyres" as well!

I've seen the pictures of the rears seats and they look standard except for a small extra cover in the middle of the centre bolster, no idea whats that for,

Age is correct for an S2 prototype but Im not sure about that rear!

Yes... Definitely US spec. Note the airbag steering wheel and horrible rear bumper. Also, if Porsche really did factory-fit that non-standard tailgate they made a really horrible job of matching the paint.

As I've said elsewhere, there are a lot of claims being made about this car in the advert and for it to be worth anywhere near the asking price they'd have to be substantiated. Cast-iron provenance would be needed. First starting place would be to confirm with Porsche that this was the Detroit show car as they are bound to have records of that. If that was to be confirmed then it MIGHT be worth something...

Otherwise, a car that hasn't been run (to all intents and purposes) in 24 years is going to take a hell of a lot of work and money to get road-worthy.

What sort of engine work would it need, apart from a good service?

Good question. Anything susceptible to time-based degradation would need replacing so that'd be pretty much all the belts, seals and most of the hoses. If it has air-con you can bet all the seals on that will be shot. Coolant with corrosion inhibitors won't have been pumped around the engine on a regular basis so there could be an issue there. Tyres will (of course) need replacing. Suspension bushes, probably. Power-steering seals, probably. Engine mounts? Braking system?

Could be quite an expensive list. Cars aren't really designed to sit unused for long periods.
