I opened the drivers door today to find it snap off half way. I'm not heavy handed, but it just snapped.

I've heard people remark that the door handles are straight off a mk1 Golf. Here's the difference on ebay:

944 door handle: £60
Golf door handle: £8

Here's a link:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Right-Door-Handle-gaskets-exterior-driver-side-VAG-no-193839206-NEW-/310381298583

Does anyone know if they are just the same part? If I can find out without stripping the door apart, that would be most helpful.
Many thanks.

i think it is mk2 golf handles, they appear identical between my turbo and the old mk2 golf i had except one has porsche written on. A friend at uni put porsche handles on his gti, i dont think he had to change anything but will ask him

Any one any input on this ?
I can safely say a MK11 Golf handle is not going to fit my 86 944! I bought one el cheapo off ebay.
I have not tried to fit it but the part that hooks under the door skin away from the catch is deeper (probably fixable with a bit of work) and the lock mechanism while similar is not the same again it might be possible to modify it with a bit of fiddling but I've not yet looked.

Anyone done this?

But there are different MKii handles - the rear passenger door is different I think but htis would not have a key lock?

I thought I would look from the other way - VW fans do the swap (and others) but it looks like a faff as they are only really after the Porsche script on the handles. So possible as you could swap the Porsche bits on the VW outer I guess. Could still be cheaper than new Porsche ones but it doesn't look as direct as I thought it was.

Thanks Andy,

I know now that the part that snapped is called the trigger, and that link you gave me confirmed proof that the trigger is exactly the same part. I think I'm just going to rebuild my existing handles with a replacement trigger.
