Bit of a basic question but I can't see it answered anywhere - is the crankshaft nut on a 2.7 loosened in the usual anti clockwise direction? I'm trying to get mine off so I can change the belts but it won't budge, so before I apply more force or an impact wrench I thought I'd check I'm turning it the right way!

Yes acw, I needed a 5ft pipe on the end of the bar to shift mine +3/4" drive.

Cheers gents. I used a big torque wrench on it and a bar extending it by another foot and still couldn't shift it - the whole car was shifting on the chassis stands rather than the nut turning, very frustrating. Plus I bent my screwdriver which I was using to lock the flywheel.

is this the one you can jam a big bar on and undo with the starter ?!

Yup conventional nut so undo ACW. This in my view is the one special tool needed, a flywheel locking tool as it iis just too FT to undo by any of the normal bodges.

My old 2.5' s wasn't even finger tight :(

Had worn a the keyway into a one about 3 times the size, no wonder it was vibrating a bit.

Damn lucky the oil pump drive is by friction, when the nut comes undone, no oil pump adios engine

Crap design basically!

I don't think I'll be trying the starter motor option, sounds a bit risky plus the starter motor is off so I can lock the flywheel (easier than going in the clutch inspection window I've found).

I'll be buying a new deep 24mm socket as then I'll be able to clear the obstruction I have and get a proper lenth breaker bar on it.

Where abouts in the country are you - I have a 3/4" drive set if you are anywhere near Leicester.

Can an impact wrench help with this, due to the minimal torque reaction?

I'm in Manchester but thanks for the offer! If I can't get it with a big breakers bar then I'll be purchasing an impact wrench!

I can wholeheartedly recommend this Sealey impact wrench. Fantastic value for money, and absolutely solid:

I've got one of those as well but it wont do the crank bolt.

Wow ok, I underestimate the torque of a crank bolt.
