Just been out for a drive in my s2 and the clutch pedal sticks half way as I depress the pedal. It will return to the top if I hook my toe under it. Is this a common fault?

It was the master cylinder when mine did this but could just as easily be slave cylinder or air in the system.

I've had this with my boxster and it turned out to be a cracked clutch fork that was in turn making the slave cylinder piston travel too far and then pop out. Hopefuly it is just the slave cylinder as I've replaced the clutch on the 944S i used to own and it aint for the faint hearted :(
P.S the word "I've" in the sentence "I've replaced the clutch on the 944S" should be taken with a pinch of salt as I just watched, brewed up and handed over the spanners to my father in law. Alot of hours involved though.
Good luck.

In order of likelihood

1. Slave Cylinder
2. Master Cyl.
3. Other (clutch, clutch fork etc.)

Have a look for any fluid. If its on the clutch pedal then its the master, if its under the car its the slave.
Have you checked the reservoir? Chances are it will be lacking fluid. You can try refilling and pumping the clutch but once there is air in its not going to want to come out.
I'll go for the slave; that's what mine was with exactly your symptoms.

I'm with Jim.

Slave's shouldn't be difficult, did one on a friends early 944 a couple of easy hours, a couple of weeks ago.

Not done a master but access looks ok

Had the exact problem with my S2 last year. As the master & slace cylinder wear somewhat evenly, I would suggest a rebuild of both units at the same time. Also check rubber hose from master cylinder for nicks etc - I replaced mine with a braided one. ALSO check (open up) the starter motor whilst doing the slave (starter motor has to be removed...), as a rebuild of that will help you with starting & is worth the effort...
