Hi

Can you help me with answers to these questions.....my car is a 1991 944 turbo

1. does my car have a O2 sensor
1.a does it need changing or wait till it breaks
1.b can I by a wideband one, to help with upgrades later or do they need to be seperate

2. what does the carbon canister do, under the passenger wing?
2.a does it need replacing or wait till it breaks

3. can the exhaust manifold be removed (under or from top) without pulling the engine

Ok its more like 6 questions .....but its a 944 so little jobs are allways bigger than you think

thanks in advance :D

Canister is something to do with cleaning hydro carbons from vacuum lines I think. Don't worry about it, think its mainly for California.

Not played with turbo exhaust, but yes they can be removed from underneath, engine can stay in, but not sure how much else needs to come off.

Exhaust studs nuts are always difficult to remove but only 5 of the 8 can be got at with any ease!

Don't know if it has an O2 sensor, but if it does I'd think you only need to replace it if you're having problems with the mixture. If you're planning more that chips and a moderate increase in boost then I think a wide band is a wise idea.

The carbon canister is something to do with emissions, I'd have thought you could remove it and all the pipes if you wanted to but not sure there's really a point doing so.

You can take the exhaust manifold off without removing the engine. The drivers side is fairly easy if you split it up in to bits but to get the pipe off the turbo you have to remove the inlet manifold to get at the bolts.

Thanks guys :D

OK so I will leave the carbon canister.....I have looked on PET it seems cars with Catalitic converters have an O2 sensor :? mine has a aftermarket exhaust so can not tell without getting it up on ramps.....PET does show a tube on the cat model that goes up into the engine bay with a cap on it ...I have one of these.... :?

however everyone seems to think NO O2 sensor So I'm thinking I agree NO O2

I'd be suprised if it didn't have an o2 sensor myself. 1991 is the last year they were built and there are o2 sensors available for a 944 - so why would such a late model not have one?

I'm sure others know the cars better than i do, but logic is pointing me towards it having one.

1. probably
1a. if its running fine then its ok
1b. you cannot replace the std one with a wideband - the ecu will not understand the signals. You can remove the std one (a couple of wiring modifications are needed for the ecu) or get an extra boss welded in the exhaust for a wideband.

2. it is used to store excess fuel vapours, which are then recycled back into the engine.
2a. it never needs attention & it can be removed should you wish.

3. yes, but you will have to remove the studs & then pull the manifolds out the top.

thanks Bertelli

Which is the best route if I'm going with your ECU ?

I think you have me confused with barks! I'm sure he can advise you on what will work best.

eta: are you taking the manifold out to get them wrapped?
