Post subject:  Vibration when gearing down

Hi I have read this forum for many years but never posted or joined but i have an issue that i would like some help with i hope you can help.

When i gear down in my 968 from 3rd to 2nd at high/medium speed and release the clutch my gear stick shakes violently and if i do it at very high speed the gear box sounds like its hitting the underside of the car almost a thumping.
I have tried to make the car do it from 5th to 4th etc but only in these gears if i release the car very slowly it does not seem to happen.

When accelerating hard there are no such problems all the way through the gears its just when gearing down as you for example approach a fast corner/roundabout.

I have checked all the mounts they all look good. It's basically when you gear down the revs fall to 1000rpm then as you engage 2nd and release the clutch the revs rise and the vibration starts.

Any help would be great, if this question has been asked befre i'm sorry i did do a search which yielded no results.

thanks

My guess would be Clutch / DMF or engine mounts, would be worth giving Kevin at EMC a call.

I may stand to be corrected, but the front gearbox mount is prone to wear so maybe worth checking

Checked the gear box mount all seemed fine and the engine mounts seem fine no excessive vibration at idle etc. Although one mount had a small crack but that was all.

What about clutch glazing??
will ring emc tomorrow thanks for all the help

My S2 has done this to a smaller degree for 5 years, i only noticed it when i bought the convertible which changes down much smoother.
As mine hasnt got any worse i am going to wait untill clutch change time and change the gear box mounts at the same time, i suspect the mounts but i am not an expert!
Good luck with it and let us know what cures your car.

Bad news I think. The 968 had a dual mass flywheel & I suspect yours has failed.
This link is to an American site for it. http://www.partsgeek.com/mmparts/flywhe ... e/968.html
