Where do you think prices are going?

2.5/2.7 Lux prices seem to be on the floor at the moment. The S2s still seem to be fetching decent money but even these seem to be slipping. Turbos can be had cheaply but seemingly only for the rough ones. Cabs still the strongest it seems.

The question is, do you think values will start to rise as the cars get rarer or are prices doomed to remain low due to the vw/audi link our cars have?

Very limited VW Audi links on all but the earliest 924's really.

I think it'll be the same as the TR7 market, values fall, hit a low where cars are worth peanuts, then people realise they're disappearing & then the good ones left start to rise. I still found people are quite startled when I tell them how cheaply a 944 can be run for.

The prices of '44s seem to have fallen somewhat in the last few years... They are now at a stage where they have levelled off. They are hard to sell but once you have one any notion of selling on to make a few pounds goes right out the window....

You are all lucky over there for the prices of '44s over here are scandalous.... I know of a nice S2 which is '92 which has been on the market for about 8 months... It was me he was talking to at Mondello

What he neglected to add is that tax for an S2 is €1500

The motor trade in general is in a bad way. Everyone wants cars that can do 50+mpg & free road tax. If you look on auto trader you can find big cars with less than 80000 miles for as little as 2.5K e.g. Alfa 166 V6, S type Jags for 4K etc. With prices like these it's not hard to see why 20 year old 944's have bottemed out. Don't think things will improve until petrol drops & the economy picks up a bit. Might take a while.

One of the main reasons I bought mine was the low price (2 Grand). Which, when you consider the price new, is an absolute bargain.
The reasons I think the prices are so low at the moment is the sheer weight of numbers, there are loads of 944's still out there. The thing now is that their worth more in parts then they are as a car. There are alot companies being set up purely to break them so I think this will accelerate the point at which they will start to become less common and values will start to rise (hopefully) :) .
Also, affecting prices is the perceived high cost of ownership, which doesn't have to be the case. The cars come under classic insurance (I pay £190). The price of parts is slightly higher than other makes, as is the cost of servicing. But if your willing to get your hands dirty you can save yourself a fortune in labour costs.
So I'm optimistic that in 3-4 years time that prices will start to rise. But as you paid £600 for yours, I think your in a very healthy position

All the best,

Andy

I think the market value of the 944 will always be significantly less than the equivalently aged 911, and that will not be changed dramatically even when there are only a few left.

If you're worried about resale values, I think it's reasonable to say that with 944 prices so depressed (the bottom of the curve?) you can expect to get a good proportion of what you paid for it back at resale, but only if you have invested some time/money in maintenance during your ownership.

I bought my 944 for 2k and when it was crashed into it was values at 4k. So if you want to make a profit tidy it up then get a people carrier to drive into it :D

I have been looking at 968s and 944 turbo's on and off for over a year, and I think a lot of them are over priced for what they are, most of them are 15 or 20 years old and they seem to fall into 2 categories the ones with few owners that have been well serviced and the ones with lots of owners that haven't. People ask top money for the good ones but most of these cars seem to be for sale for months, personally I'm not going to spend £8k on a turbo or £10k on a 968 knowing there's a chance I may have to spend another £2k to put it right.

Could be the reason I haven't bought one yet I suppose.

Quite.

The amount of owners on a Porsche is of very little relavence. They tend to be bought as a short term toy run for a year or soto gte it out of the system & then moved on. Also a few years ago a numberplate change would have triggered the change of owner, doesn't happen any more but used to. Mine has had 4 personal plates since 87, so that ups the ownership count.

Personally I bought a car without any history on the basis I was going to bring it up to scratch & even the best cars I've known have had money spent on them since. But yes 2k doesn't go far, a full set of belts, seals & idlers, a clutch & a set of engine mounts & there is your 2k gone.
What you have to remember is that A. the pool of cars is getting smaller, & B. the good ones will always fetch premium money, if you keep looking for "unobtanium" then you'll never get one. The market determines price & the ones up for sale will always eventually find buyers.
I suppose it depends on your budget & how long you wish to remain Porsche less.

Yup

 So nearly bought the Rogers car but haggling over belts etc upset the owner and he won't return my mail now :o . The 500 ring laps put me off on your friends car at the price, so as you can gather I'm not too bothered how long it takes to find one, now if that red rose on PH wasn't so much money........

Not sure I agree with you here, if the car has had several owners short term late in it's life it's not likely they have thrown money at it, likewise if someone is selling one shortly after buying it I get curious as to why. If I wasn't planning to keep a car I wouldn't spend thousands on it.

And how do you know? All you'll see on a V5C is the last owner & the previous one so how long have the previous owners owned it for?
I agree if the 2 changes are relatively recent but in the case of mine it's had 9 owners.

I'd look at the history, if it had any, if it didn't I wouldn't buy it unless it was really cheap, was yours really cheap ?.
