Merry Christmas  not being an expert with the oily bits can anyone tell me what is leaking from my car ...if anything? the power steering pump is coated with a oily substance and there seem s to be something leaking from the bottom of the engine  Ken

I think you're going to have to clean the area and wait on the fresh drip showing? I was convinced my steering rack was leaking and got one reconditioned, only for the hose going to it to burst a week later. Not always obvious as the oil can run along until it finds the lowest point to drip from. |

Another source of your leak if it's not from the Power Steering pump could be from the oil filter. I have been advised that should a non Mahle or Porsche filter be used then, the seal doesn't do its job properly and you get a seepage from the filter compression ring and gravity does the rest. I have a similar situation with mine at the moment and will take the advice given to me when the time comes. This will be soon. When you installed the recon Power Steering Pump did you use a new washer on the banjo bolt? There is also a tendency for ATF to seep from the reservoir, where the pipe is joined by a jubilee clip. From the photos sent it could also be a coolant leak from any one of the top hoses? Worth ruling it out, but unlikely. My suspicion is the oil filter. That oil on the sump would suggest a leak from under the cambelt cover somewhere. The oily pas pump is probably coming from the oil filter housing (it looks like engine oil) - could be drips from a recent oil filter change? Both common as muck, yours looks a lot drier than most! |

Thanks Guys...will check the oil filter....... reading several threads....... would I benifit from an engine reseal? If so what cost do we recon? thanks Ken |

Personally, I don't think you'll get any real benefit from an engine re-seal. Especially if you're not oozing oilly stuff from every mating surface. Common areas of seepage are: oil filter, (especially if you forget to clean the mating surface, DON'T fill the filter before fitting (Gravity takes control) and don't forget to smear the rubber sealing ring). rear cam oil seal (£4 and about 20 mins to do (Silicone sealer is a real boon here too, just enough to keep the seal in place while you replace it)) and re-use of the 30p sump washer after an oil change. |

It is probably just oil left over from when the oil filter came off the last time. If your front seals were leaking, there would be drips sitting on your sump or around the area. I wouldn't be worried. Give it a right good clean and run it with the wheel off for a bit to see if you can see anything. I would change your antiroll bar bush though as it is bulging and won't be doing very much. Get some Polybushes in. Alasdair |

dont worry about a little oil leak.lots of engines are famous for being leakers but are still very powerful.probably good for a few years yet!

I had a low pressure PS hose go porous for want of a better word. Took me ages to narrow it down! |
