My car is going in for a re-spay this week so spent all day striping out all the windows and doors...then I began to remove the old stone chip paint as this is being replaced ........... On the lower part of the drivers wing I found 3 small rust holes about the size of a pencil .....behind the wing there seems to be some white rubbery stuff ![]() whats the my best repair option? can a plate be welded in or does the wing need to come off? I want a future proof repair I have checked the sills and they are OK so is the rear wing sorry photo was taken in dark so not so good ![]()

The white stuff is the mastic used for wing attachement from new The wing bottom is fairly easy to repair with welded in patches of steel fabricated to fit I doubt if any repair will last forever and nor would a new wing! If you want some idea of what causes this sort of problem, tip some water under the bonnet just behind the bulkhead and watch it drain through to the bottom of the wing... I'd be more concerned about the signs of rust on the sill.... you need to inspect inside the sills for serious rust - respray may be lower priority if you have problems there Another place for rust is the inner section from floor pan upwards which the wing covers, there are several thin box sections there ( you have to pull back the plastic wheel splash guard to see this) they may need attention as well. |

Any rust can be repaired, I did the bottoms of all my wheel arches this year and it looks great now. If you are having a respray I would have the whole car inspected for rust. The last thing you will want it to get a nice shiny new layer of paint only for a bubble or two to appear over the winter. Spend the money now on sorting all the rust and live in peace for the rest of days. |

Thanks for the response, here is a better picture, I removed the stone chip from the other wing as you can see there is a very tiny patch just starting at the same point, looks like Iv'e caught it early

Seen a lot worse, that will fix easily, get some more cavity wax and the like in your sills and at the bottom of the front wings, certainly doed not justify new wings. Will be as good as new when finished, keep the crud out of the front wing extensions and ocassional re rustproof to keep the orange stuff away. |
