Hi everyone,
Just had the car out of the garage after SORN for six months. Passed everything on its MOT apart from the headlamp level test. Had a closer look at home and it appears that the outer headlamp pivot bracket has sheered off (drivers side). Had a difficult time taking the nose off to have a closer look ( 2 hours and lots of unexpected screw and bolts) and it looks like I may have to take the whole lamp assembly off to replace. Or is it possible to just loosen the mechanism from the motor to give it some play? Any help much appreciated.

Cheers Tony

I done this very job the other week for my friend on his 220 turbo. Much swearing was involved but I got it done without any major stripping down required.

Take off the cover for the headlamp and also remove the plastic surround that the cover bolts onto. This is a bit fiddly but needs done to give you enough room to manoevre the assembly back onto the 2 pivots once the broken one is replaced. Then unscrew the intact bracket from the nose cone side. Before doing this remove the headlamp motor so you can get access to all the bolts. Take note of any spacers you have and make sure you refit them the same or else your alignment will be out!

You should then be able to unscrew the broken pivot. Before completely removing the last screw make sure you are holding tha backing plate which you can access from through the inspection panel in the inner wing cover. You can then replace your broken pivot and it should go back together with a little perseverence and head scratching!! You will need to put the pivot in the light unit before the bolts go in, you will see what I mean.

Before fully tightening the bolts for the pivots it is a good idea to lift the lights up and down a few times (from the cabin switch) to check and alter alignment. Depends on how much of a perfectionist you are!

Thanks this will be a great help. The mechanic who did the MOT also thought that there may be a sticking valve! given the cost of fixing a 944s engine i'm thinking about a RV8 conversion but thats for next year I think!

Cheers Tony

My headlight tutorial might shed a bit more light on the situation
