Post subject: | Mixing engine oil ? |
Iv been running castrol magnetic 10/40 4 the last 20000 mileages changing it every 6000 with a filter, yesterday I had 2 make a 200 mileage journey which was unplaned. Fuled up and the engine light came on. So I top up with mobil super 2000 10w/40 which is a semi-synthetic and the castrol is fully. Should I change the oil and filter right away? Do I need a need new sump plug and washer? Or would the car be save 2 use till next weekend which I can change the oil once iv got a new filter? due 2 the oil mix would I need 2 use a flush? |

Save your money, just change as normal at your next service. It will be fine and only bother to change the plug if its damaged, always worth having a spare though. New washer every time you take the plug out even if you dont its not the end of the world it just might leak a bit. Personally if your changing the oil every 6k I dont see the point of fully synthetic but thats a whole thread on its own. |

Depends how your driving the car during the 6000 miles really !!? Semi synthetic is a waste of time. Save cash and go regular or spend more for more protection and go fully synthetic |

Just found the old tube off castrol it's part synthic. And the vw codes are the same as the mobil vw505 501. The car is used daily and 2 and from work is driven pretty normal. Other times a bit harder, but never really trashed or ragged. But I don't mind bouncing it off the red line out off a round about ![]() Thanks 4 the feed back |

Castrol Magnetec is a waste of money as theres no such thing as magnetic oil! 15/40 semi is good cheap oil & as light as you should go in a 944. Change every 6000 miles or every year along with the filter. Light oil causes problems with the lifters & also higher oil consumption not to mention leaking gaskets. They were not designed for it. ![]() |

Like has been said Castrol Magnetec is a semi synth (or is usually) so should be no issue topping up with the Mobil you used. I would think almost any oil is better than letting it run low. Nearly always use 0w40 or 5W40 in my S2 usually fully synth (but that is my choice) and the low viscosity has never caused an issue with cam followers, seal leaking or excessive oil usage, indeed the most problems I had with noisy tappets was using 15w40 which seemed to take an age to pump up the tappets, whereas the thinner one seems to get them to quieten down quicker, but this may be my individual car and not generic 944. |
