Hello to All,
Thinking of buying a cordless impact wrench, any recommendations, don't want to spend the earth.

I've got a Clarke one. It's really useful. Comes with a spare battery. I got it from machine mart. Although beware, going into a machine mart you'll end up wanting more tools you didn't know you needed! Really good price too. Can't remember how much off the top of my head.

I have a Clarke one too. Lots of the rally boys say they are crap and won't last 5 minutes, but I've found it really useful - it saved our bacon on Rally GB 2010, and I've since used it extensively while breaking the 944 I bought, plus a bunch of other stuff. It's a decent enough tool - I can't fault it for the money, and I use it a LOT. Cost £92 IIRC, but see if you can wait for a "VAT Free" event at MM and save a few quid.

Do people use impact drivers on 944 wheels nuts?
I've had one stripped nut that was a major headache to get off already. Put on by someone who should know better.

Nuts are ali so quite soft.

Personally I would not use an impact wrench on the ali wheel nuts as you will stretch or at worst take the tops off them. I also always use as 6 point socket on them as well.

Unless you crack them off with a bar first. (if you're feeling lazy or in a rush)
I really do recommend it though, it's great for home use. It was strong enough to break the tighter than tight bolts on the trailing arms. And helps breaking rusty bolts that ive snapped and caused a lot of headache in the past.

Thanks for the replies , don't intend using on wheel nuts just for general stubborn suspension parts and front struts which I have just replaced,

I have a Sealey CP2400, cost £103 absolutely brilliant - I use steel wheel nuts!

The irony there is that impact sockets are usually 6 point ones whereas it can be more difficult to find silver ones that are 6 point.

Hi :)

I have the Snap-On cordless one... but its very expensive, I use it on the wheel nuts AFTER i have cracked them with a socket and bar, it would be strong enough to tighten them actually , but I like to FEEL the last tightening by hand so use my socket bar again....sometime I use my torque wrench if I am in no rush but again its Snap-On so drastically expensive..but you really do get a lifetime guarantee with their tools so you only ever buy them once...

The cordless impact wrench is around £400 from the van...

Galvanic Corrosion?

Past experience on my S2 had to get a full set of locking wheel nuts when 1st service showed some " NUT" had used a Power wrench to put the nuts on & cross threaded one of them. Needless to say I screw em on by hand & final tighten with torque wrench.

I agree its not unusual - my old rangie has exactly that - but a metal to metal reaction as stated above would be my concern.
It may only be an issue in cars where wheels are left in situ for months on end. Otherwise there would be no chance of a problem.

Surely alloy wheel nuts on steel studs must be a problem then?
