Post subject:  Oil

After 6 months in storage it's nearly time to put my turbo back on the road. It was purchased in October last year, some of you may recall seeing a Titan Grey bridge spoiler model in Autotrader that was quite cheap. (photos and introduction to follow shortly)

Having read through some previous threads it seems I should have changed the oil before it went into storage. Nevertheless I thought it best to get the old stuff out now, especially as the previous owner was using a Halfords own brand oil. By the way it's on 115k on a replacement engine and I'm not intending to track it or drive it to death!

Now here's the thing, I'm really starting to obsesse about brand, grade etc. Silkolene pro s 10 / 50 seems the one most people favour, however its not cheap and really hard to find other than mail order. Mobil 1 seems cheaper but I have read horror stories about turbo's failing etc. Do I therefore;

a) Get a life, stop worrying and use Mobil 1 etc.
b)Hold out and spend the extra on Silkolene.
c) Seek medical help for obsessing about lubricants. :D

What you do is put in pretty much any 15W/40 semi synthetic and change it every 6000 miles using an oil filter with a non return valve, as the OEM one is (£7 from OPC), then forget about it!

Probably worth giving it a flush first with the old oil still in given what you have said.

Thanks, that was quick!

Stuart, when you say flush, should I add something like wynns engine flush additive to the old stuff first, or just warm up the existing oil at idle and then drain?

Thanks again

Add in the flush then run it. Forte stuff is good.

Alisdair, where abouts in the country are you, I was hoping to do this tomorrow, if you're local-ish I could pop over?

Personally I'd run a fully synth in a Turbo, I've seen & heard too many fried turbos to take the risk. Opie oils does some decently priced synths so I'd go with that or a Halfords one depending on pricing. Certainly the 6K changes make sense as well, I'd certanly not stretch it any further & if doing lots of cold starts might run shorter than that.

Went for the Silkolene in the end. Found someone locally who sold me 5 litres for £40 all in which seemed to be just over the price for Castrol etc. He's a motorbike dealer who had it lying around for ages. He was also looking to sell on a 25 litre drum for £200 which people might want as a group buy?

Thanks again for all the advice!

Good Choice,
FWIW :-
My Turbo has been run on Silkolene Pro-R for the last 5 years, flushed & changed every 12 Months (low mileage) but it comes out looking & smelling good. (Previous owner SPS who built the new engine swears by it over Mobil1)
(Hope you oil was still sealed and not too ancient as shelf life is also a factor to consider)
Opie offer of the moment "Buy 2 x 5L of Silkolene Pro-S or Pro-R for only £79 !"

Don't mean to hijack thread but...

What do folk recommend for my non-turbo 2.5 Lux, Synth or semi? 10/40?

Thanks

I use semi 10/40 in mine and it is ok. I only do about 1000 miles a year and it gets changed every year along with the filter.

N/a will be fine on mineral TBH Plenty around in 10/40W Mine uses oil so runs Valvoline Turbo VR1 15/50W which is a very high spec (SL) mineral which I buy in bulk from someone locally for around £12 for 5L. I change it every year & do around 1500miles or so. When my 2.5 was a daily driver I did it every 6K regardless.

I use Castrol GTX semi synthetic, it has always seemed okay to me and now BMW, Audi and VW use it instead of the overpriced Mobil 1.
