Post subject: | Double Din Stereo |
Just enquiring, has anyone fitted a double din unit in there 944? Was it difficult? How do you get on with it? Have you any pics? I am toying with the idea of getting a radio/CD/Sat Nav double din unit but not sure what this will look like if it will fit. Thanks |

I considered it you may have to fibreglass a surround to get a perfect finish.....what put me off was the look it is very modern some how just does't look right |

I would think it would be quite easy, the single din and the tray underneath is a single din size as well. There also quite alot off space behind and under the tray. |

The tray underneath the stereo is shorter than a radio and the hole tapers because of the angle that it mounts at. A Full length DIN stereo will probably hit the tunnel if it is mounted at the same angle as the original. |

Quote: The net price for the radio navigation system, excluding country-specific taxes, is EUR 595.00. For a small extra charge (EUR 655.00, excluding country-specific taxes), the device comes equipped with automatic traffic jam avoidance, Traffic Message Channel (TMC). They look very nice IMO. |

That looks the business! May be tempted................... What sort of money was in the head unit and what did you have to do to fit it? Not plug and play then? Stuart |

I got it from my local Halfords....I wanted the Pioneer version, as that was substantially cheaper! (£440? I think) but they didn't have any stock, the Kenwood was £599, which I did not want to pay, (I've bought complete cars cheaper!) So the 'manager says....'well as its about to be discontinued, we will do it for the same price as the Pioneer!' so yes a bit of a result for me..... The fitting was OK, had to remove the bracket that is bolted within the centre console, and 'shoehorned' the double din cage in its place, bit of cutting and blood letting at that point..... but I had bought some ISO plugs/sockets, and therefore the actual fitting of the power, ignition, left-front, right-front, rear-right, rear left, speakers was not that bad... My 968 has the 10 speaker option, with an uprated Sony power amp under the seat (according to the cars history file) so didnt sound bad at all... there are so many audio 'tone/eq' settings on this thing, you could spend all day just experimenting with the sound settings. I did add a small active powered Pioneer sub woofer, to fill in the lower end of the sound, and thats wired from the sub output on the back of the Kenwood unit. It also has a rear camera option, which if wired into the reversing light harness, would give you a natty rear view... but cant quite bring myself to do that just yet, although some guys on an American 968 forum have put small cameras where the hatch key slot goes for this type of thing..... The Sat Nav element is Garmin based, works well, has a lifetime sub to 'traffic master', and the blue-tooth hands free works great with my Iphone, and also as a link to play music too!, although I did buy the Ipod cable, and just leave my Ipod nano in the glove box, so have 8gigs worth of music... sure beats having a 6 pack CD in the boot. I would not want to watch a DVD movie on this without a strong battery mind, as just playing with it during the installation flattened the cars battery! The unit is a Kenwood DNX 5220 BT, here is the link to the Kenwood site, as its discontinued now, there may well be some bargains to be had on some remaining stocks, if anyone's interested. http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/pr ... e/DNX5220/ |
