Can I put a 2.5 16v engine in place of an 8v one ?

Post subject:  Can I put a 2.5 16v engine in place of an 8v one ?
Ive had a good look round the net and cnt see any clear indication.

I got a low miles 1988 944 with good engine at a decent price recently and instead of overhauling my engine
was wondering if i could put its 16v engine into my 1988 2.5 8v car.

Anyone know what sort of work may be involved or have done it themselves ?

You can & the engines bottom ends are pretty much the same as far as a transplant goes, BUT! The 16V lump has a lot in common with the S2 3 L & will need the loom & ECU from the 16V car & possibly inlet manifold & AFM. The exhaust manifolds are different as well. Not sure about the cooling system.
It will be worth downloading PET, the parts manual from Rick Cannell or Promax & looking at the specific differences. So this will be a lot more work than you think. I'm surprised you cannot find an 8V for sensible money, either 2.5 or 2.7.

As Jim says you can but why would you want to. Plenty of good 8v engines around at the moment.

And not enough good 2.5 16v engines about.

They only seem to crop up once every few months and then they're being sold for over £500.

If I wasn't so desperate to get my other 944 back on the road I'd be very willing to take the 16v engine off your hands.

sounds too much work

ill try and get the car transpoted tomorrow and see if it can go back on the road
if not ill burst it

I don't want to go against the grain here but surely if you're up for the engine swap, swapping over the looms, ECU, manifold etc. is the easy bit once both lumps are out? Well, not easy but you know what i mean in the grand scheme of things! Things are a lot easier to do when theres no engine in the way. You do have the 16v car intact so you have all the parts you need.
Also it'll give you a good chance to give your engine bay and engine a good clean up paint and polish while its out!

IIRC the 944S has the turbo running gear as well, so the transplant will need inlet and exhaust manifolds, exhaust, ECU, AFM, airbox as well as running gear

not sure about that, what bits of the 944S are the same as the 944 turbo?

The bits won't be Turbo they'll be 16V similar to the S2. Most of the ancilaries will be different, the manifolds from an S2 may fit, that is what I said will need a careful comb through PET to sort the differences. Or possibly give Jon at JM or Barry Hart a ring.
