As my "New Car" thread went rather off topic and I said I would make a thread about what I was doing to my car, to maybe help others with their 944s Here we go!

Had the black car for about a month now. Fortunetely with the weather I've not had to do much to it and recently it's taken over the gold ones daily driver crown as I love driving it so much and it gives me chance to take the B-Roads ... EVERYWHERE. OK, thats not too hard I do live in Derbyshire after all ....

Car wise I've not had much in the way of work with them, they've been well behaved this month. but I've made a few improvements.

- Rust treated the underside of the car, where any undersealant had flaked off. Always going to be an ongoing and boring job to do
- Black car now has a new interior (black leather sports seats instead of Porsche script sports seats.) Pictures to follow. The job only took about 2 hours which included fitting the rear seat - it didn't have one before. It was also nice to get factory original sports seats as well - which were already fitted to the car!

I'm sure I will have plenty of things to put in here as time goes on

you should start a garage blog over on pistonheads, i did it to keep track of costs but works as a journal too.

It's a 1974 MGB GT Factory V8 I suppose it's really Jon's car (In the same way the Porsches are mine - we both have insurance on them but I choose what I do to them and when / if I sell them etc.) ... but that doesn't mean to say I can't use it, hehe

Ive just been reading an Octane mag article about Ken Costello who made V8 conversions before the factory even thought about it and in fact it was because of his success that the factory eventually started making them and then gradually squeezed Ken out. Hope its a good one for you!

I very rarely go on there anymore and I though what I had to say maybe of interest to some people on here as I try to do as much work as possible myself. I'm just a DIY'er not some time served Porsche specialist either, lol! OK, I've not had anything "exciting" to do as yet but as things crop up I will post what happened, what the fix needed to be and ow I solved the problem (or if someone else solved the problem for me, lol)!

If no one wants to hear what I've been up to with my cars, just say - I won't be offended and will not post.

944BLOKE - This is from Jon, really, as I was only recently informed of this, apprantely MG had been planning a V8 anyway, indeedy Costello did get their first, though! Costello V8's go for silly money now, infact factory V8s are on the rise too! WHEN will this happen to my beloved 944s?

I think that there are several reasons why factory MGBGT V8 values are high and likely to go higher.

Rarity. Not many were built. When new, they weren't that fast and they were expensive.

Plenty of "normal" MGB owners who aspire to owning one. It think MGB's are probably the most popular classic car about. The spares situation is very good and the club is very active.

MG now owned by the Chinese. The Chinese (who are prospering) are waking up to how good the older cars are and they are snapping them up over here (both "normal & V8's).

It's a V8!

Incidentally, my son has a rubber-bumpered MGB roadster. It shares garage space with my 924. MGB is a very interesting drive!

fullchat - I've owned lots of MGBs and a Midget as well I agree with what you're saying, there were around 2500 made (V8s). I was purely making the comment that 944s to me are worth much more than what they go for. Having owned 2 911s (SCs) I'd pick a 944 everyday over one - controvertial, maybe, especially round these parts but front engined Porsche rule the school

Anyways I've been out in the V8 today spun the wheels from a standing start hehehe Looking forward to sharing these two (944 and V8 ).

I think all the front engined Porsches are undervalued. I think that it must either be an image thing (80's yuppie) or the great unwashed think that they are too expensive to run.

A certain motoring programme on the Beeb doesn't help either.

Well,Ken is still working with MGBs and Midgets and Sprites etc with a guy called Tim Fenna at Frontline Costello. A couple of websites for you ...www.mgcostello.com and http://www.frontlinedevelopments.com .

One of the cars featured in the article belongs to Roger Cook the famous investigative journalist and has a Wildcat 5.0 V8 giving 345 BHP.
As regards 944 values, well your guess is as good as mine.They made so many of them that until they become scarce they will still be cheap so buy as many parts as you can while they ARE cheap!

I suppose you are right

The V8 is a great little car, I really like it, the 944 and V8 make a lovely pair together.

V8 is rather interesting it's a very early car - 1973 - but wasn't registered until 1975, my guess is that it sat in a showroom for a long while and they had to get rid when the rubber bumper model came! It's in blaze orange (I actually really like the colour) with a black interior. It does have a silly aftermarket front valance but apart from that it's lovely. We went to Stoneleigh MG show yesteday and I was eyeing up some parts for it, lol!
