Also on eBay. Seems like a very honest and genuine description with good work carried out. Ball park fig of £2500 seems good too. If I did it, it would have to be via eBay or unseen over the phone as Northumberland is bloody miles away...!

You have to take your own view on it. It's a very lengthy and seemingly honest advert, but just a couple of maybe helpful points....

Quote from the advert - "Its just been serviced and a HPI check shows it to be clear of any damage. Its one of the last of the 944S2s built (registered in January 1992)."

It has the wrong rear spoiler on it for a car of that age. Cars produced mid - late 1991 and on to the end of the 968 series had the 968 bridge spoiler fitted.

Quote - "and if you lift the boot carpet, the bodywork is very clean and straight."

Why would you put that if the back end hadn't been damaged? Maybe that's why it has the (cheaper or easier to find) wrong rear spoiler on it.

Quote - " I don’t think there is any great expense looming..."

I would enquire when the clutch was last changed - that could be £700 of expense looming

Quote - "I went on to spend a fortune on various bits and bobs, (replacement alloys and tyres....."

Why didn't he buy a set of matching tyres then?

Quote - "and I have just cleaned and lubricated the gear linkage."

Strangely that wasn't the first thing I thought to do when I bought my car. It must have been difficult to change gear, which could indicate a clutch problem.

It's also strange that the car has wanted for nothing, has had a high standard of work on the sills, but a poor paint job on the drivers door and rear wing (which is more than the one panel he mentions). Could be full of filler.

Somebody else will have a different view on it, but what you want are all the negative views to make sure you buy with your head and at the right price - rather than with your heart because it looks a nice car.

You could ask somebody local to go and have a look at it for you.

Well you did ask!

Why does everybody want an S2 for 2.5K. It will cost you the same again in the first 12 months at least & will still need lots spending on it. Chances are it won't pull the skin of a rice pudding. 2.5K is Lux money. One that will need 1 to 2 K spending on it. Theres no such thing as a cheap Porsche. How would I know. I've been there. Of course if you just want to brag that you have an S2 & it doesn't bother you that it drives like a ship in full sail & smokes like a deasel. Go for it.

Certainly worth a look but I wouldn't bid/buy without a viewing. It looks like someone has cleaned off the O/S inner wing then gave up as the N/S one in the engine bay shot looks much dirtier. Maybe it's a sign of how it has (or has not) been looked after.

Not sure if it's a rare colour but never seen a 944 in that blue before.

Hope don't sound too negative but I think looking at any car you have to go with the thought of it having issues, you're more likely to leave the rose tinted specs at home then! 8)

Umm lots wrong with this. Firstly it is Doom Blue which is a real turn off for lots of people. Mentions belts but doesn't mention cam chain & tensioners & at that mileage it could be absolutely critical, also no mention of water pump. Not too fussed about no bridge spoiler as some cars could have missed the boat. Agree with John about tyre mix, it is wrong & Contis aren't great anyway.

JJ, I paid £2k for a reasonable 1991 S2 in grey with a grey leather sports interior. A wee bit rough round the edges but it had had an engine rebuild and a respray so I can live with doing a few things on it. A 5 grand car will still need the same. You just have to be careful what you buy and not waste lots of cash on a Lux!

What's wrong with "Doom" blue?
....Other than being difficult to keep clean?

Agree about mixing the tyres, but I have Contis alround on the 968 and they seem fine to me. Maybe I just don't try hard enough.
Looks OK in the photos, but I would definitely go and see it and test drive it before bidding on eBay. Check for rust in the sills as most of us on here know how expensive they can be to repair.

Well lads and lasses, I had a good chat with the seller (who is frikken miles away in Northumberland...!) and agreed a price. Talked through tensioners and chain, checked and done. So....I have taken the plunge, picking up in a month as my work schedule dictates I can't ge there before.
£2.5k for a straight 'Doom Blue' LOL (I like doom blue...!!) S2 seems worth a go, and if it goes boom, that's life on an 18 yr old car.
Oh yes, the clock and dash lights work too....!

Will keep you posted -- MANY thanks for all your words of wisdom, caution and enthusiasm!

It's won't be 2 hard 2 reclaim 2.5k from bracking it if the worse should happen. Interior looks clean, shame its not got the brigade spoiler as that would off been worth 300 ish

There is a thread about this car over on PCGB forum. The car was on Ebay previously and the seller bought it for £1500 but I believe he's since spent some money on it. You can research about it on PCGB yourself. I don't know anything about the car - just the buying/selling history from when it was on Ebay by the previous seller as I considered a cheeky bid of £1550 for it but watched it sell for £1500! It was previously also advertised on Pistonheads but I think part of the problem was the poor advert and it didn't sell.

I really don't agree that a 5K car will need the same. Unless it comes from a dealer! As to wasting cash on a lux. No way. I've had my car coming up to 5 years. Go back 5 years these were still worth somthing. I've spent lots on it but not as much as the Pug 106 Rallye I used to have. The Lux is much quicker. I don't like a scruffy Porsche. Don't see the point. Thats pretty harsh on an enthusiasts forum! You need power & torque. Doesnt matter which model so long as it has some! Condition is the key!

Well done, mate.
To me, it looks a very reasonable buy for that sort of money.
You may need to spend some to bring it up to how you want it, but what the hell.
The beauty of buying and owning a 944.....
Keep us posted!!

Triman - re. under the boot carpet - a lot of 944s are rotten in the boot floor. So I presume this was meant rather than "it's had a smash"?

TR7V8 - you've made my morning :D "Doom blue" not heard that one since I worked in a main dealer !

JonK - enjoy your new car! :)
