Post subject: | luggage cover for split fold rear seats |
i'm looking at getting a luggage cover for my 1989 Lux with split fold rear seats in marine blue . having read a few posts on here regarding these covers am i right in thinking that they are a)harder to come by & more expensive than a standard load cover b)were a bit crap when new and time has not improved this matter with 20 + years of use c) if you have a wife (which i don't) who is handy with a sowing machine you can partly rectify point b by replacing the old material ? Given these problems is it possible just to screw a standard luggage blind to the back seats (thus locking them together ) or are there other compatibility issues ? alternatively i could fashion some attachments on the back of the seats allowing the blind to clipped on and off & retain the split fold function when needed . any one tried something similar ? |

a) yes, b) I don't think they were that crap when new but many look crap now and c) yes, my Mum has offered to give a refurbishment a go for me (though she's a retired seamstress) - next job! Not sure about fitting the older style blind. I'd suggest you perhaps buy the correct one and refurb it if required. |

Wasn't there a clip on cargo net? So instead off the roller blind u can just instole 2 hook points one on each seat? U could store the cover down the right side wheel arch under the carpet, which folds back? |

My wife made me a new one. It's excellent and cost £6 plus our time. I dismantled the old one and she made a pattern and a new one. I didn't bother with the front flaps that cover your luggage if the rear seats are down, although she would have done it had I wanted her to. I never ever used them (took me a couple of years to actually work out what they were for - I thought they were pockets) so didn't bother. I'll post some pictures later. |

Interesting. I use mine as pockets but yes they would hang down and cover the luggage area with the seats down. It is desperately poor design especially when the fixed seat has a nice roller design. I did wonder if any newer cars blind might fit the inserts in the car and then fit the hooks on the hatch. If you screwed a fixed blind to the seats then you wouldn't be able to use the split seat flexibility and it is quite useful. |

thanks for the replies . some pictures would be great john as i'm not sure what the cover for split fold seats looks like - a google image search has found nothing . i've had a saved search on e bay for a 944 load cover for about 2 months now & i can't remember seeing one for split seats but plenty for a standard roller blind which is one of the reasons why i was considering possibly adapting one to fit . point taken david about losing flexibility but the porker is only a 2nd car and i was thinking i could attach the cover (to the seats) in some way that would allow it to be easily removed if needs be . |

There was one on ebay a few weeks ago - in black - I didn't bid for it as it wasn't perfect either and not much better than my own. It sold for £67 from memory. I'll try to photo mine tomorrow for you. |

![]() Basically, two poles and material! Pockets at one end which hang down (see previous postings). Hook on at boot end as you would expect and "screw in" to side panels at the other end. Mine isn't too bad but badly sun bleached and a couple of tears in the fabric at the bar ends. Looking at it in some detail - this should be dead easy for my Mum to re-do. |

Mine came with split rear seats and had a standard luggage cover laying in the back. I thought of attaching hooks either side but the cover is wider than the seats and I wasn't sure it would work. I therefore made up two brackets from aluminium sheet (an old advertising sign) about 2 1/2" x 1/2" which I attached to the tops of the backs of the seats. The brackets stick out either side of the seat backs allowing you to screw the luggage cover into them using the holes already at each end of the cover. I did this early last year and it still works, although I should have used thicker aluminium - I'll probably change that this year. You do lose the split seat function, which I have never needed, but it is easy enough to unscrew the cover if necessary. You also need to be careful when lowering the seats so as not to put too much strain on the cover. |

thanks simkin911 for taking the time to photograph your cover - much appreciated . do the poles screw directly into the sides of the interior or are there other connectors needed ? (the owners manual seems to show some plastic hangers that you rotate) . i spoke to my mum on the phone and she seems pretty confident from my (admittedly poor) description that she'd be able to replace the material if i was able to get hold of a cover which needed a refurb . however being a yorkshire man living in scotland this makes me particularly grippy ![]() keith , your solution is along the same lines as to what i was thinking of doing . does the cover attach to the boot end ok without any further modifications ? think i'll keep on looking out for both types of cover and which ever one i can get for a bargain price i'll go with . i can then either refurb or modify as needs be . |

Hi Stevie d. I have one of the luggage covers in the pic posted by simkin911 (same colour and just as faded). This is the standard type fitted to 968 Coupes which all have split rear seats (I didn't know 944s had them as well as all the ones I've had have been one piece). It attaches to the interior of the boot just behind the seats, so when the seats are folded down, the the blind stays where it is. You should have a hole each side just behind the seats that the blind attaches to via a couple of locating lugs which are part of the blind. The other end clips onto the tailgate, so when you lift it, the blind goes up with the tailgate. The good news is that you can have mine for whatever the postage costs as I've replaced it and I was going to chuck it out. The fabric will need replacing as it has some huge tears in it, but all of the parts are present. I managed to find a good one at an autojumble for £40 (they guy didn't know how much they were worth), so my old one is surplus. Let me know if you want it. |

Yes, the cover just clips into the slots at the rear where the hatch pin brackets are. My car hasn't got any fixings at the side behind the doors where the split seat type cover would attach, so either the seats are not original or the side trims have been changed, but I assume that the hatch pin brackets at the rear are the same on both types. |

nice one steve that cover would be great and allow me to keep the car as close to original condition as possible . my mum is coming up to scotland to visit next month and although she has already indicated her reluctance to cart her sowing machine up on the train (honestly i thought parents were supposed to be willing to do anything for their children !) she'll be able to take the old material back with her to make a replacement . i'll pm you my details . thanks to everyone who has posted on this subject your help has been very welcome . i'll post some pictures once the cover has been refurbed and is in place (by which time i hope to have nailed the two leaks which are causing the right hand boot storage well to fill with water) |
