The seals around the side skirts and headlamps on my 968 have gone hard and shrunk a little. Couple of on-line shops have kits for sale but I've no idea if these are easy to fit or not. I also need to fit a new seal around the right rear hatch lock pin and possibly the rear bumper and body seal.

Are these things easy to fit? I've not done them before and aren't much good with a spanner. Do you have to remove panels etc???

Or can someone recommend where I can get it done close to High Wycombe please?

TIA

Hi Tallguy,

I can answer some of your questions as I've replaced the seals on the sill covers (side skirts). I'm not sure that it's
impossible to change the seals without removing the sill covers, but I found that removing the sill cover seemed a
logical way to do it. The seal hooks underneath the top edge of the sill cover which is why it maybe tricky to put it on
without removing the sill cover and to be honest I used some Evostick to glue my seal to the sill cover to ensure it didn't
fall off. It also made it easier to get a good fit around the sharks fin (the bit that goes up around the rear wheel arch
(especially in the lower bend).

The biggest problem is getting the sill cover to fit flush against the sill and I had to put spacers between the bottom of the
sill cover (inside the lower part of the sill where it bends around under the car) and the screw point to achieve this and in
so doing so it levered the top part of the sill cover inwards towards the car. A professional maybe able to warm the sill
and remould it.

Removing the sill cover is relatively straightforward. There are about 6 bolts underneath that have to be taken off, a hook
like bracket that sits in the rear wheel arch (see picture below where the plastic on my sill broke due to age) and if I
remember correctly a bolt that needs to be undone by first removing a small panel that sits in front of the sill in the front wheel arch.

Once theses have been removed you can gently lever the sill cover off as its now only being held on by plastic poppers
(see picture below showing the male part that's attached to the sill cover). They won't break if you're careful and they
can be re-used but be mindful to do things slowly as the sill cover plastic can become a little brittle and you could break
the attachment point (if you do you can glue a new bracket back on afterwards). If you need to do the job quickly possibly
because this is your main car then you might like to consider ordering in a few plastic poppers (or whatever they're called in
advance of the work. I found that the bolts securing the very front (behind inspection cover) and very rear of the sill cover
(the hook) were rusted and needed replacing). They're similar to the plastic poppers but they have a bolt attached to them
so you can't use any old bolt.

Once the sill cover is off you can glue the new rubber to the back of the sill cover and when dry re-fit.

Anchorage point for plastic pop rivet (the red circle). If replacing pop rivets it's probably worth replacing these too.

Be prepared to find a lot of muck and possibly some rust behind the sill covers so get some rust remedy, hammerite and
spray paint before you unbolt anything, unless this is your second car in which case you've probably got time on your side.

I hope this helps.

It helps a lot, thanks. I won't be trying to do all that myself and will find somone to do it for me.
