Since starting a thread 'Project Venus', it seems (through good advice from fellow enthusiasts) my 944 has rotton cills. Pics below. :(

Well, if anything, there are a number of decent threads on the go about this topic - particularly one over on pcgb forum (944) - "beware of what lies beneath". Repairs are entirely possible with either some home talent or a few quid in the bank.

Not the best news, but not the worst pictures that have been posted. How did you get so far inside the cills with a camera?

Took sne very bad pictures off my sills today! Think everyone should take the pungle and do the same, wish this thead had came up b4 respary! There not rotten yet but there rusty as a sunken ship!!!

I think nearly all cars will have some rust (except those that have been hardly used or had significant repairs). I suppose it's whether you would have replaced the inner/outer sills before having the respray done? The question is whether the extent of the rust would actually justify this work - bearing in mind the comments re most cars having some rust in this area.

I'd suggest you maintain the areas regularly and you may find it'll only progress very very slowly as a result.

From what I can see it's mainly the inside off the out side sill, body work. The inner looks quite healthy, got some large bubbles starting 2 show. Maybe it's treat able? Didn't look so bad a few months ago when I removed the carpet in the seat wells, and took a look though the bung holes.

Using the camera on a mobile is deff a top tip 4 a new buyer!

On the 924, there are drain holes (slots really) all along the base of the sills. Clear them with welding wire or a similar probe. They might be covered up with underseal. I don't know if 944's are the same.

I used to have a 1979 Merc 350SL. The design was such that rainwater etc was channeled through the sills and then drain away under the car. No wonder it was rusty!!

944s are the same, theres a channel at the rear of the sill that drains to the front of the rear wheel arch too.

if they're not too far gone you can spray the rust with sump oil, dynax s-50, waxoyl or whatever your preferred anti-corrosion fluid is.

the dynax comes as an aerosol with a handy pipe and nozzle for hard to reach areas, but im guessing plain old sump oil is as good as anything and less likely to clog the drains further. as long as the rust is dry and the oil gets absorbed by the rust (id try and saturate it) it will certainly slow it down if not stop it completely. make sure youre drains are clear after youve done it.

I used dynax and am due to check/reapply as soon as theres a reasonably dry day (horizontal rain at the moment :/ )

Wow those cils look nasty (great pics.) I think I will have a look at mine this weekend, thanks for the preventative advice.

I got the smallest camers phone in the house to do mine as it is difficult with anything else. Mine have been replaced by the previous owner and the new (still shiny) zintec is welded on the inner sill just above where the rust stops in these photos. I have a couple of small bits that need doing but not MOT stoppers. I am though a time served welder which is handy!!

Well, if you can still lift the thing up by the original jacking points it's perhaps not too bad.

Best thing to do is get yourself one of those watering cans that you pump up full of air to spray a fine mist of water over seedlings. You can then modify this by fitting a length of hose over the end of the sprinker can and fit the misting jet in the end.
Next, fill the can up with your favorit rust converter - POR15, Kurust etc...
Pump the spray can up and stuff the hose into the sill.
Operate the trigger of the spray can and slowly withdraw the hose.

You will have now coated the entire inside of the sill with your favorit rust converter.

No, it won't stop 'em rusting away, but it'll slow things down a bit!
