Cars been sitting idle for three weeks due to snow & too much work in the run up to Christmas. Started it today & took it for a run. All seemed well except that it started to get too warm queuing to get back into my road. Not serious but gauge up to the second mark with no sign of the fan cutting in. Lifted the bonnet & it didn't smell hot. But the bottom hose was not particularly hot. Bet the new thermostat's failed. Bu***r.
Any one tell me where to get an 83 degree one from. Have an 87 one sitting on the bench but I'm not putting that back in. Doesn't do to leave these cars standing too long. :(

have you tried a quick and dirty test by disconnecting the electrical connector to the radiator thermister and putting a link wire shorting the electrical connector ?
This should earth and energise the relay coil so that the 12v+ supply sitting on the contacts is sent to the radiator fan . and make the fan run continuously. At least this would prove the fan and relay are ok and probably pinpoint the sender as faulty.
Important this only work with 2x pin connectors. With later 3x pin you need to use a multimeter to find which pin is earth

Thanks Peanut. When I checked the car in daylight the coolant level was a bit low. Nothing drastic & I'm not sure what happened. Topped it up with neat antifreeze & ran it cap off. It warmed up slowly. The stat opened & the level adjusted it self with a lot of expansion. More than I've seen before. The fan cut in & out. No sign of any leaks. All seems fine. I have to wait for better weather to road test it but it may just have something to do with the extreme cold. I live down by a river where it's coldest & the car lives outside. I don't know. But it doesn't seem to have done any damage.

thats what happened to my Lux just before the head gasket failed completly. A small break in the gasket between one of the cyclinders and the coolant sysyem allowed combustion gasses to over-heat the coolant and over -pressurize the coolant system. Whils running the coolant system vented the excess pressure via the filla cap thus the water needed topping up a little periodically. I used to hear some gurgling in the heater occasionally

It might be worth getting a leakdown test done on the coolant system for peace of mind. That water must have gone somewhere.

Hope it turns out to be nothing more than a slight leak of coolant somewhere.

With a new turbo gasket & a freshly rebuilt head thats very unlikely. Pin hole in a hose is more like but I will get to the bottom of it.
