Post subject: | Strange ABS problem |
I have over the last 2 weeks seen my 944 S2 develop an abs problem. It started the usual way and after a search of the forum it seems that a lot of members on here have had the light come on after the car started rolling. Thats what happened to mine the first time the problem occured........... But then the nature of the problem changed. Now when the ignition is turned the antilock light illuminates and goes out as normal with all the other lights but the about 10 seconds later (before moving off) it comes on again. I might add that there has been at least one occasion since this all started happening that I started the car, drove off and completed my journey without the light coming on at all! Has some component been on it's last legs over the last couple of weeks and finally given up the ghost? If so which one? I know the ABS system can be tested with a diagnostic test device but is there any way of troubleshooting this without one? Any help appreciated! Stuart. |

As the fault is not consistent I think I would look for a bad earth somewhere on the system, probably one of the sensor earth wires where they fasten to the disc backplates - they rust and crack causing poor / intermittent earth. Alternatively wait until the fault is consistent - but that may never happen. |

Cheers, I will check the plates. Does anyone know if the system checks the wheel sensors on ignition? I know it checks them once the car is rolling but if one was completely dead would it trigger the fault light even before moving? |

The ABS system is checked on start up, and if all is fine the light goes out. It's worth searching the threads for ABS - there are a few of us with these problems and plenty of comments about it. ABS faults can be very frustrating. |
