No, he didn't even bother to reply to my texts and wasn't for answering the phone either - proper crap service that is! He's obviously got more work than he can handle.... I've contacted another one who is just as useless....

still, onwards and upwards :)

Well tha's dissapinting! Good luck finding someone who can do the welding for you.
Btw, from the pictures you posted of the carpet removal, I'd be inclined to remove all of that section which is glued onto the rusted rear bulkhead.
The rot should be cut out with a slitting disc and I think you'll need more room than you've currently created; you don't want any damage caused to the carpet by grinding sparks and heat from welding. Just give it consideration...

Thanks Karl - The first welder simply hasn't replied at all and the second welder having replied a few times initially to ask about the job has now gone completely quiet :( What is it with these people

I've managed to get the carpet a bit further back and will see what I can do to remove as much of the underseal from the inside as I can. I have a 3" cutting tool for this exact purpose and the welding will be done from the other side of the panel which is behind where the torsion tube would normally sit. My plan with the inside is to put a heat shield (soldering/ welding gauze or similar) and metal plate behind and be on stand by with the Co2 fire extinguisher :)

I may get chance to start the cutting out process tomorrow....

Yes, its a glorious sunny Friday again here in't North :)

So I got to grips with cutting out the bad and preparing for welding in the new.....

Heat proof gauze behind the panel to protect the carpets
Image

Part way through the top cut
Image

and its gone....
Image

Not that big overall
Image

Just needs tidying up
Image

Most of the panel removed where spot welded to the floor pan
Image

View from inside, looking out!

So I just need some new metal and a bit of practice at welding before I have a go at this one!

So, I can't teach myself to weld in 1/2 a day so I managed to find an expert to do it.... Well at least this time!

In the meantime I will carry on learning the dark art of frying bacon :)

Ok so it's not the factory finish weld he promised but it's solid and he used galvanised sheet for the job which he coated very liberally inside and out with black stone guard or something afterwards!

The rebuild gets back on track :D

Now that the metal treatment and under seal are all dry top coat of paint applied... OK its not a factory finish and it needs another coat yet, but its hidden behind the torsion beam and isn't going to be visible and it doesn't need to win any awards - just needs to keep the water out and metal in!

Collecting my other bits later that have been blasted and powder coated :D :D :D

Collected a few bits from the powder coaters today :)

They missed one though as it still had part of the rubber bush to the filter holder... and it was a pita to get out.... G-clamp and vice saw it off though

Bit of Hammerite Smooth later and it's looking good

Thought I'd do the nuts and washers while I'm there :)

Picked up my huge order of 4 clips from Adam at Bolton OPC the other day and had the pleasure of a tour of the Carerra GT in the workshop....

Image

When I got home, the clips were put to use on the heat shield

Image

Gave the rear panels a coat of clear Dynax

Image

Image

Drive plate refitted and clamp tightened up

Image

Image

Reassembled my refurb end parts starting with the fuel filter clamp and new rubber bobbins

Image

Monday will see some more progress, tips and advice welcome in the meantime :)
