Yep !

But to be fair I have never known 16 pairs to fail at the same time

Just checked history file and in Oct 2004 it had a spring replaced by Strasse after investigating a misfire

£2k

Pair of springs to repair mine are £20 from Porsche and no other parts are needed !

Thanks for the offer of springs I may have them for spares as spring failure misfires appear to be common

A very broken spring by the looks of things Dave!!! At least it broke now eh and hopefully you won't find anything else.

I realise now you were at the Christmas Midlands Breakfast Club, at which time I was trying to decide whether of not to buy a '44 so seeing your helped my decision ;) (i was stuck between a VX220, 944 or an E36 M3 at the time, of which all three were in attendance)

I was in the red 106 Rallye if you spotted it...

lol small world as it was my mates VX220 parked down the far end in the turning circle

I had a small misfire back then but it cleared after about 10 seconds of running from cold - well I certainly know what is was now !

It's alive again !

New pair of springs fitted with head still in-situ

Leak tested and compression tested - ALL GOOD - so no valve damage

No misfire and not surprisingly the slightest of "tappet" rattle has now gone as well !

Now that is great news! It is always a result when a change brings out a better outcome than you expected.

Now for the next question. How did you change the valve in-situ? On other forums, some mention to put compressed air into the cylinder but I am sceptical myself.

lol I call it using my noggin ! (Local dialect for using my brain -lol)

Ok I'll try to keep it simple

Cams out - all valves are closed

Insert cylinder leakage pipe into spark plug hole and pressurise to aprx 30 psi

Put a socket over the valve you want to remove collets and tap with hammer

Collets jump out - stuff rags around valve to catch collets

Remove broken spring/s

Fit new springs and collet retainer cap

Using an injector socket and a long pry bar - put socket onto collet retainer and lock pry bar onto a suitable fixed point and push down onto injector socket and through the cut out on the inj socket replace the collets

Release air from leak tester - job done

Todays little task was to clean this mess up hidden behind the centre console

Dont you just love 1990's "add-on" wiring

Luckily the original loom was not badly hacked apart

Then off to Halfords for a £65 Pioneer RDS with Bluetooth and iPhone compatability

Great price, great sound, USB and a hands free car kit that works a treat

Bargain stereo!! I've always found Pioneer to have good sound, almost irrespective of how much you spend with them

Just fitted the same gear stick but the bolt is substantially longer than the original pin and fouled the shoulder that the boot clips to. Had to grind the head down to give clearance and fit thinner washers. Rear linkage also changed so it wasn't due to excessive play there. Ok now but disappointed at the need to do it The 9products short shift lever looks better engineered but a lot more expensive.
