Loads of work happening now in the workshop. Engine pretty much built back up with everything either new or reconditioned. Particularly happy with this...

It's great fun painting engine bits, as I'm finding with my 924.

Oh its no problem Simon. That said as I'm self employed work only happens during the working day.

I'm there all day Friday beavering away (which means getting under my mechanic's feet).

Visitors brew up though. Thems the rules.

Cool. Further to our posts about decals on PH, Id be interested to see your timing equipment. The more old school the better.

I saw Paul Roddison yesterday and he was welding an impressive Caged cage into an NA which has made me think about getting my own SD cage fitted. He was reluctant to give me an idea about price until he sees it though.

Im also trying to work out where to fit my cut out. Because the battery is in the NSR wheelarch Id like the mount the switch there too; both in order to cut out duplicated cable runs and also because the best place is right by the positive terminal. Im going to see if I can make a suitable bracket which will mount onto the NSR seatbelt anchor.

This is a picture of Peter Empsons from years ago, but it shows the location and the mounting clearly:

Image

If I can get the orientation right in the limited space then I will fit one bowden cable from the key which will siamese into two inside the cabin with one pull under the NS windscreen and the other mounted on a bracket on the passengers side of the tunnel.

Alternatively: I may continue to slack off and play XBox... :D

My battery is staying in the under bonnet position so I am going to bore out the aerial aperture on the NSF wing and have it there.

As for timing kit, yep, got loads of the stuff, most of it old and crap! As already said I (well my navigator) uses a couple of modern cheapo stopwatches.

Will the scrutes pass that? Its exposed and it could be damaged in an accident. The 'scuttle' area is relatively protected with the added advantage that theres a ready tapped mounting point where the windscreen block went. I tried to get some photos of the bracket recently (asking for close ups on PCGB), but Im going to have to make it up as I go along.

They seem happy enough to overlook the pulls not being on the drivers side, of course.

I hadn't even considered the blue book for cutoff position, good point.

As you say the redundant wiper hole makes a good/better alternative anyway.

I read it in the bath the other evening, again (well, Cars and Competitor Safety anyway).

This picture shows the location that I mean. Its not the best picture but its the only one thats easy to find of an EMC built car.

Image

The fabricated bracket is located using the tapped mounting holes for the NS windscreen block which has been discarded.

Id prefer to mount them on the drivers side, but the NS makes for less complicated routing to the extinguisher and the master switch. Legally you can mount them under the rear window, but thats not within the spirit of the rules even though it doesnt break them, so any scrute is going to take a really close interest as a result.

We've been cracking on with lots more work over the last few days, yesterday was a huge push and we managed to rebush the entire front end with Powerflex purple polybushes (only to find that the topmounts were kaput so replacing them today). Also fitted the new Koni Yellow adjustables all round.

Question: how much rear end drop does the eccentric offer without mucking around with the torsion bar splines?

The engine has seen a LOT of love now and is running very sweetly indeed. The list so far has been: new headgasket and full gasket set, new waterpump, new alternator, new belts/rollers/tensioners, injectors magically cleaned, radiator recored and a load of other bits. Then we bolted it back together.

Image

Image

The MSA/FIA regulations that my rallies operate under means that I have to retain some kind of rear seat. After looking at a few options I decided to sort it myself so I stripped back as much of the padding on the lower rear squab and refitted it onto the bare metal. In total it weighs 2.3kg so I'm happyish with that. As people have said it is perfectly balanced weight low down between the axles so shouldn't be much to get upset about.

Image

The front seats are fully fitted now (no picture) but this was a test fit. They are carbon Cobra Imola Pros and are a lovely seat - easy to get in and out of too which is handy for me (massive) and my navigator (no legs).

Image

That's about it for now. I'm not at the workshop today but in my absence the dampers are being refitted with the good topmounts and the Brantz rally meter being installed in the dash.

Fun fun fun.

First rally is Saturday October 12th at RAF Pershore in Worcs. Can't wait to give it a beasting. In our class are the following cars (all in full on lightweight rally trim), should be very interesting.

1975 Mini 1000
1975 Alpine A110
1978 Mercedes 280S
1978 Porsche 911SC
1980 MGBGT
1980 3 Door Range Rover
1981 VW Golf GTI Mk1
ME
1983 VW Golf GTI

You'll be able to watch it on TV (Motors TV - Friday 15th November at 22.00) and I'll also have a fair bit of in car footage on the Go Pro.
