Congrats on a job well done 8)

That's a very tidy looking engine bay now, and even a matching coloured air filter - very snazzy

Hi Paul,

Thanks, just a query that you might be able to advise on, starts and runs with no issues, no leaks at all, but the coolant temp is higher than before ?? ,the needle sits at exactly 9 o'clock position on gauge, before all the work it was always at 8 o'clock,,,, it did take a good 1hr and half to get it bleed ? although this seems the norm..also the cooling fan cuts in almost straight after a gentle drive,,,it cuts out again and there is no sign of bubbles in the header tank or loss of coolant at all it might be all normal but i've not done any comparisons with any other 944's any thoughts guys

cheers

Did it have a new thermostat as part of the work?

As they get older the spring weakens and they tend to open a bit too early and consequently your car runs a little cooler. According to the manual 'normal' is anywhere between the two white lines at 8 o clock and 10 o clock and most people report their's are closer to the 8 o clock position. Both times that I have had new thermostats my needle rose slightly towards the 9 o clock.

Mine sits around the 8 o'clock position & varies up & down by the width of the needle.

Yes i replaced the thermostat(oem kit) and the inner seal,..the old inner seal was melted to the water pump casing, it took an hour of very careful work to cut it out! the rib of the seal was a solid mass of congieled rubber......... its running hotter on the gauge than before at fan off and fan on cycling,,,,,the cutting in temp of the fan switch is a needles width above 9 o'clock but drops as the fan cools the rad back to 9oclk when the fan cuts out. I do the same journey to work and the fan cut in after less than a minute of being stationary driven gently which has only occurred since the head rebuild, .....when i refilled the coolant i went 50% a/f to water, i bleed a lot of air off from the top of the engine so i'm thinking there might be still some air trapped in the head ?? what do think?

cheers

My 968 seems to be running warmer too than it has done previously and the only thing I have changed is the radiator cap, as suggested by Hartech when they serviced it, as the seal was looking a little tired, although they said it was still holding pressure.
I always thought it ran too cold before though with the needle just reaching above the thick white line on the bottom of the gauge. Now it sits more between the 8 and 9 o'clock positions.
Perhaps the cooling systems in both of our cars are running at a higher pressure now which in turn is allowing them to run hotter too?

mine sits on the 8 o'clock line, and fan comes on at 9 o'clock position or thereabouts, its probably the thermostsat has a different opening temp, there used to be a summer 'stat and a winter 'stat, i may be wrong but if my memory serves me right there was a 10 degree difference, and various temp 'stats are still available so maybe your new one just has a higher opening temp

Hi Derrick,

I think that it comes on when the needle reaches the first of the upper white marks (around the 10 o'clock position). Don't know when it goes off again though. I'll have a look at the weekend.

Simon
