Thanks Jon, that does match with what I am seeing. Looks like I will get a little practice at changing head gaskets before I do my turbo's! Oh well, Leaves more time to plan for mine.

Washed the Boxter S yesterday (in the rain....how committed am I). The 944 was delivered today, I cleaned 25 years of interior grime & other unsightly's away, listed the bits needed for the MOT & phoned around a few places trying to get some advice....4 days holiday to go, so 4 more days of Porsche time :)

Drove it !!
Spent an enjoyable saturday at JMG ( Thanks Jon and Steve at the burgers !! ) then did 500 miles over the weekend with my new head gasket and valve guides etc.Anecdotally felt much smoother , felt more powerful ( again anecdotally ) and also saw fuel economy improve dramatically ( actually ) from 23-24mpg before the head work to over 27 mpg , and that was whilst 'making progress' !! :bounce: :bounce:
Dropped off my seat back for leather repair to the side bolster today.Should get it back by the end of the week. :D

Also drove it! To Donington for a couple of Stints round the (Slippery) Track on the DPRAC Annual Track day (not bad for £30). 100 mile round trip + 40 on track, then spent 2-1/2 hours to 6:30pm in the dark cleaning off all the muck its collected today and over the past 3 months.
Put it away in its heated/Dehumidified garage and will give it a good cleaning & waxing over the next few days.

I've been sorting out my electrics today they're in a right state thanks to some bodger

First it was the headlights they went up but not down so I replaced the motor as the wiring was hacked as you can see from this pic.

Image

The headlights still didn't drop after the motor change so I looked at the switch and found that at some point a previous owner had cut through the insulation to fit a bridging switch in to lower the lights so the problem must be a faulty switch as the lights went down when I touched the two hacked wires together, I'll get a new switch and hopefully that will do the trick but for now I have fitted a bridging switch which does the job nicely.

I also replaced the wiper intermittent relay as I had no park or intermittent mode, the relay did the trick but they stayed on intermittent when turned off so I'm going to need to look into that, so back went in the old relay until then

Next up was the heated rear screen, the wires to the gas struts were perished and when I tried to pull the spade connectors off the screen the whole attachments broke off the glass so using some conductive paste I've stuck them back on.

I'll see in the morning if it did the job once the paste has set hard enough to re attach the wires and the rear screen is misted up to see if it clears.

Finally got an hour to run my car today. It & I have been laid up most of the year. Connected the battery and started first turn. :)
Did clean out the battery compartment and found a large amount of dirt / compacted mud under the top of the front wing. Anyone else had that problem?

Thinking of getting it sorted and use it when weather permits as it would be happier if used more.

Would you hire it out to another member just to keep it used?

Following a recent thread on here about de-cat'ing an S2, yesterday I thought I would do some research and development into the whole thing.

Spent some of the day yesterday picking an R&D car from my fleet, which is a cat equipped one, does not have a chip, has typical mileage, and has good valve guides... Found one with 140,000 miles and had a head rebuild about 10,000 miles ago.

So, gave it a service with all legitimate OEM parts and prepped it for the dyno for baseline testing.

Will be starting a 944 S2 modification thread once we get rolling.

Also entered talks with one of my exhaust suppliers in Italy, will be sending them a complete cat and front exhaust section today for them to jig up to make a cat bypass.

Not sure that would be fair on anybody as the car has as many niggles and faults as yours. Keep trying to sort it out but time is a premium.
Hows yours going now?

In that case I will be holding off doing anything, if you end up producing a proper decat that goes from the manifold to the back box either incorporating a small bomb box or just straight through pipe then I will buy one from you.

Finally tidied up the ECU and the loom and wires in the footwell so its neatly under the carpets where the orginal DMEs lived.

Also played with a third map which is ignoring the ISV and controlling the idle using the ignition. So far it actually seems better which is good.

Also finally worked out why the AFR guage was showing a different value to that shown on the ECU (its an AEM uego with a feed to the emerald K3). Turns out i was being thick and there are two ways to write info to the ECU, one is programming a map to one of three memory positions and the other is for ECU set up which includes things like inputs... so whilst the software on my laptop was showing the correct set up I hadnt actually written it to the ECU!

Been running with out the ISV active on a map for a week or so and its fine, the Emerald helps sort out idle using ignition if needed and you can see it working.

Been mapping out the next move which is remove the doddery ISV, venturai delete (very odd the pipe is still there even though the cycling valve etc is not!) and sort out the vac line to the Thorttle body which I have discovered is missing totally and a few other oddities I think I have found.

Mechanically this weekend installed a refurbed Dizzy in the mk3 Golf 8v gti. The previous owner had it 180 degrees out and its hall sensor (cam speed basically) had packed up so a rev limit of 5k was kicking in. Corrected all of this and new coil, leads and plugs at the same time. Removed and cleaned its throttle body which in part controls idle so thats sitting high now. I have a lead arriving to plug the car in and I should be able to let it re calibrate the throttle position using Vag Com.

Yesterday technically - cut a section out the fuel return line that was leaking and joined the two sections together so that my mpg should be back to normal (and it won't set on fire).

I also installed my new radio and managed to route the ipod cable so is completely hidden and pops out in the cassette holder.

Dropped the wheels in for a refurn which at £60 a corner seemed a bit pricey but looking at the work they had done on some other wheels I'm confident they should return like new.

Searched the garage for a 17mm oil drain hex key to no avail so will be purchasing one today in order to drai nthe diff oil, then its put everything back together and take it for a spin (not on the roads due to no tax, insurance, MOT or interior).
