I had mine removed with the arms still on. Remove drive shafts and maybe back box off exhaust. Good time to replace the drive shaft oil seals at the gear box.

Smash out old bearing will leave the case still in, wield inside the case to pull the bearing Shell In slightly and add heat. Then while hot knock it out. Frozen bearing straight in. Then a large socket same size as bearing, put treaded bar though and large washers and and nuts and do one side up to pull the bearing in. Don't try and smash the bearing.

Any idea what the code is for said drive shaft seal. Ive got a horrible feeling I've ordered the wrong thing - a radial shaft seal part no. 016 409 399 B, pos 15

No - you have not ordered the wrong thing - the drive shaft seal at the gearbox is that number.

Hope you bought a VW one for about £3.00 - not a Porsche sourced one!

Oh good.
No straight from opc. Wouldn't know what part no. to ask for at VW, so Its the price of peace of mind that I've got the right part, for me ( being new to 944 ownership)

Hi, that PN is actually a VW number, as VW/Audi make the transaxle... I always put any Porsche number into Google to see what turns up, the price difference for the same part makes shopping around worth it.

Just had the rear bearing fitted and now no nasty noise. Very happy. Can't recommend Tom at Petrodiesel enough. I provided the bearing from opc Sutton Coldfield (they know Tom) he only charged me £80 labour, including changing the drive shaft seal! No wonder he has one of the best reps around.

Good to hear your noise has gone! I am tooling up to do both my rear bearings shortly and at the same time replace the drive shaft seals (016 409 399 B) on this gearbox. I enquired at the OPC who wanted £10.46 + VAT each (for two that is £25.10 inc). However, I have just bought the same item(s) from Brickwerks (the VW specialist) for £3.19 + VAT each, so then including postage - I bought two for £11.30 all in. So, there are a few savings to be made here and there. :D

They were even cheaper at German Auto Spares...but they haven't got any in stock at the moment. :(
