Took the wheels off last night to take a look - turns out it has got stainless brake hoses and front pads are brand new (rears have plenty of life left in them as well) - which was a nice surprise :)

They guy we bought her from had it sitting for a while so i'm hoping this is the cause of the brakes beign a little 'snatchy' - will give her a good blat and see if that makes any difference :)

I asked a question about brake fluid here: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2055

IS DOT 4 ok to use (said DOT 3 only on the filler cap)

Cheers

Mark :)

Yup probably need to be given a good hard run to clean them out.
DOT 4 OK DON'T use DOT 5 as it can cause grief on old systems.

Can you explain the 5% thing?

I'm afraid I have to disagree 100% on cheap pads, especially for the track.

Yup the standard has been in place for sometime, I think it's called E90 or similar & covers replacement parts not made by the vehicle manufacturer. It's detailed here http://motorcaremotorfactors.co.uk/components/apec.html amongst other sites.
Unipart will be OK, probably a bit generic TBH so one pad grade fits all or at least a lot. I use EBC Greens for mine as it leaves less brake dust.

15%; which is quite a lot of braking to lose. Id suggest that you buy decent pads from an OEM supplier and Id advise you to never, ever, use EBC pads.

Why they are fine, have been on 99% of my previous cars, plus others I've done brake rebuilds for, have always given braking equal to or better than OEM or A.N. Other & less dust? Why do you say that?

Personally Jim, I find EBC pads to be terrible. You couldnt give me a set. Actually, if anyone gives me a set I will give them to Jim... :)

I agree with Simon. I have to say that whenever I'm challenged by someone who likes EBC on my view they usually say they have used them for ages etc. I say try a decent pad and see what you've been missing. I used Greens in the past for the reduced dust, but the last time I tried them the forumulation had changed and they were no better than OE, so they were in the bin within weeks.

So 5% or 15% I still don't understand. How do brake pads get compared by percentage? If we're talking braking effort presumably you must remain above 85% of OE braking effort as it is ludicrous to legislate that brakes must be less effective than possible.

Had a good experience with EBC in the past. Had an XR3i which suffered from pretty bad brake fade using standard pads so got some red dot grooved discs and green stuff pads which cured the problem. Not used them for about 3 years though as my current car has pretty good brakes in comparison and is a bit more of a cruiser.

What pads do you recommend for the 944? Planning on rebuilding all of my calipers and probably replacing all the discs too just for the sake of it.

Pagid for me. I used Mintex (1172 maybe?) on my hillclimb car a long time ago, I dont know whether they still make them. They were good when they were hot but you needed to try to heat them up before a run: reverting to original Pagid pads gave far more initial bite from cold and they coped with heat build up well too. For later Brembo calipers I might look at Ferodo too, but Id probably end up with a Pagid product.

Again I agree with Simon for road pads. For track I don't think you can better Performance Friction, which (in 97 compound at least) are fine from cold and just bite harder as they get hot. The downside in using them for the road is that they are relatively pricey and that they produce a lot of very aggressive dust that will eat into paint if not washed off regularly. I believe Porterfield are very similar though I haven't tried them.

As an aside I recommended PF pads to an Aussie guy who was an EBC Red fan. Even I was amazed how much better he found the PF pads. I think he claimed tens of metres later braking points and seconds off lap times in the class he competes in with his modified 944 Turbo.

Just to be clear. I only put the unipart ones in as I needed new pads & didn't want the car off the road until they came. The unipart ones are every bit as good as oem. At £15 a set you can fit new ones when ever you like. I have yet to experience brake fade with them despite some hard stops! Discs are expensive & that matters to me. I don't like EBC either  Used to use Mintex M171 & swear by them. On track competition pads will always be better. Just depends how much you want to spend. If you were loaded you wouldn't be tracking a lux.

£15 a set? For brake pads? Are you sure? Which model of car? (Lux/S2/951)

I paid £40 for a front-axle set for my S2 about 3 months ago. Mintex, from GSF.

I'd agree with the comments on here - they are not much more than OK, but do seem to work better when warmer. As it's a daily driver (not a track toy) you may be able to do better with other brands. Oh, that's with ATE disks by the way.

Oli.
