I looked at many 944, 924's and 924S but they were all dogs and one 924S for sale near me was so slow an 1100 Fiesta would have burnt it off as it crawled up the road with its transmission vibrating like hell.
The 944 which I eventually bought my wife and I looked at 2 years ago when it was up for sale before but the seller wanted over 3K and so I stopped looking for a Porsche until it came up for sale and we saw it by accident only this time it was the right price and the right time, it wont be for sale again for years.

A lot of what has been said is spot on, JMG - thats everything I wanted to say.

I will add that I am a motor trader, a proper one with a forecourt and a VAT number - not one of the "home dealer" sellers.
I have interest in old Porsche's and my stock reflects this. I do the odd 928/911/968 but mostly 924/44
Here are some facts based on recent sales, not speculation-

Even in the bad months a 944 sells, easily. More so than most other cars. Oval dash 8v and S2 are the most popular.
The customers buying the cars have noticed the price increase over the last couple of years and want to buy now, in fear of being priced
out of the market if they wait. This is what happened on a bigger scale to many with the 911.

A lot of the buyers are "would be" 911 buyers but can't afford a decent one now, so put their money in the best 944s available.
The increase is slow, a lot of people still think the 944 is a cheap car, as JMG said this vision is not helped with turd examples on ebay which to most look no different in the pics to a decent S2/Turbo

The buyers who have done research know a decent S2 at 5k is now a bargain, there is usually a fight for these cars and most are gone in a couple of days. This suggests to me that there is a shortage of decent S2/Turbo cars and that they are under priced, I can only see these increasing over the next few years. I would not be surprised to see 8-10k being the norm for nice ones in a year or two.
The 8v oval dash is a good seller, decent ones fly out at around £3500-4000. I doubt they will ever pass the 5-6k mark.
The square dash market is slow as is the 924, these cars need to be cheap to sell, and if its decent/serviced ect I can't afford to sell it cheap. A lot of classic cars have the highest values in the earliest models, but I don't think the square dash will do this, it may get even, but the oval dash is a better developed car.

My opinion, they will never be worth a fortune. They are gaining in value as well as interest, but I think the only 944 to cross the 20k mark will be the best Turbo S/SE

Excellent post and I totally agree with you :D

When I went to buy my 944 Turbo I wanted one with low miles, FSH and excellent bodywork (inc. original undamaged sills) and with no bodywork repairs. They are out there, but I waited nearly 6 months to find the car I wanted and the day I went to London to view it my friend came with me as there was a low mileage S2 30 miles away that ticked the same boxes.

We ended up driving back North with 2 cars (one each) having parted with nearly 5 figures each, but I personally wouldn't sell mine unless the offer was very high teens (and even then I probably wouldn't sell it)

This may seem crazy to some owners, but the car was £45k new in 1991 with options included, I have the Bill of Sale (£2k less than a 964 Carrera 2) and the build quality of the car is exceptional, so why should I sell to buy an inferior car for the same if not more money?

Fair point, and agree the ebay examples pull the prices down of the good ones. But that cannot last for ever as cars will either be restored to a good standard by those that can afford to or have the technical knowhow, or eventually scrapped or broken for parts. Hopefully this will leave the 944 market relatively buoyant for sellers & more so for owners of the higher spec models that are harder to come by.

Out of interest what would you pay as a dealer with say 120k for a mint condition 944 turbo m030 and what would you advertise it for on your forecourt ?
