Opinion.

This was from Jon Mitchell at JMG Porsche in an email he sent to me regarding fuel pressure regulators and injectors. I think he's a good source of info:

The problem with the 2.7, is like the 944S it was never designed to be a real model, but a test mule for the technology that was being released in the 944S2, so many things are unique.

With the 944S, they were testing the newer Motronic ECU, 16v head and cam technology, injectors and fuel system

With the 9442.7 they were testing the 3.0 block, fuel pump and high pressure fuel pressure regulator.

Then half way through the 2.7 production, they changed all Porsche cars to have a screw on fuel pressure regulator, instead of all of them previously being push on return lines.

So the problem is, the fuel pressure regulator you need is only applicable to the first half of the 944 2.7 models (high pressure with a push on fitting, rather than the 2.5 which was low pressure with a push on fitting, or the later 944 2.7 and 944S2 which is high pressure with a screw on fitting.)

Likewise, the injectors for the 2.7 were special for just the 944 2.7, designed to deal with the higher pressure, but have the right flow level for the high pressure but in a 2.7 capacity engine and special maps in the DME for this package.

They basically made the 944S and 944 2.7 as test mules for a year of production each, to prove the new parts they planned on fitting in the 944S2 and later the 968, a bit naughty really.

In a fit of cleaning madness- actually that’s not true, it’s just that I had all the cleaning stuff out as I was helping my son with his skip, I took advantage of the lovely weather and decided to clean the plastic engine tray as it was absolutely filthy.
First gave it a soaking with some Bilt Hamber Surfex HD and a bit of agitation with an old brush followed by a blast with the pressure washer. That got rid of some of the muck but I was left with a greeny-yellowey stuff over 7/8th of the tray. Attacked a small area with some neat BH Surfex which had no effect but it would come off if I scraped it with my thumbnail- came off in tiny pieces that made it looked like sand, still couldn’t work out what it was.
Attacked it with various cleaning products and assorted workshop supplies & seemed to get a bit of a result with Autosol & polishing cloth
I then decided to try some tar & glue remover. Sprayed a test piece and left it for about a minute before attacking it with an old rag- well it only went & worked :bounce:
Rest of the panel was liberally sprayed and left to soak before being given a thorough going over with some more polishing cloth which I also sprayed with tar remover. Took a fair bit of elbow grease but eventually it was all off and after a quick wash down, it went back in the garage ready for me to attack the other side tomorrow.
I think it was some sort of wax protection like waxoyl or similar product as reading the label on the tar remover it mentioned about wax removal too. Still whatever it was is now gone and after tomorrow the panel will be ready to be refitted.

Decided to attack one of the diff seals that's been leaking for ages. Just knew it would escalate. Removed exhaust for a bit more room and the heat sheild fell off, well the half that was still there.
Had to chisel 4 cv bolts and then decided the cv was past it's best. Drained oil. fitted seal and refilled gearbox. Bloody seal was leaking worse than before. I thought it went in a bit too easily. The od was wrong, can't remember who supplied the seal.
So order went in for new CV joint, diff seal and I found a heat shield in the States.
I ordered a seal from Rose Passion and one from Partworks so it's a race to see which one arrives first. They have both been great in the past beating UK suppliers by several days.
My extra instrument panel arrived from Lindsey racing after 1 month (Parcelforce), Fedex delivered a catch can from the States in 2 days.

I have a lot of respect for Jon, we swapped a lot of PM's when he was active on here. But IMO the 2.7 head and block were also being trialled for a updated turbo engine.

Nice job Martin - I like Auto finesse ‘s snowfoam.

I’m a bit behind on updates so this covers a number of days.
I discovered whilst lying under the car one day (as you do) that part of the oil filter/ engine mount steering UJ heat shield was AWOL and probably goes some way to explaining the short life of the replacement engine mount on that side. Waylander duly advised that if Porsche was actually open then the part I required would see me hand over in excess of £110 of your finest British pounds to Uncle Ferdinand’s representative in the spares department.
Consulting with evilbay turned up nothing in the UK but a number of possibilities in the US. However, once shipping and duty were added in, it was more expensive by quite some margin.
A number of calls were made to the breakers listed elsewhere on the forum and having provided as much information as I could- part number, location and even pictures, I sat back and waited for the phone to ring.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

Anyone would think these people really dont want your business! Why go to the trouble of answering the phone tell you they will have a look and even give you a price for a new one and then don’t call you back.

As a last roll of the dice, I called Douglas Valley and they came up trumps- sent me couple of photos to check it was the right part and were not unreasonable in their price either.
When it eventually arrived- the post is noticeably longer due to current conditions, it was well packed and the bolts and washers were in their own little bag.
I am supposedly working from home and actually had something thing to do so it was not until the following day that I was able to take it apart, attack it with wire brush and then give it a good coating of Hydrate 80. The following day, a couple of coats of engine enamel were applied and left to dry.

Fitting proved to be a contortionists work out for my fingers......

As alluded to in my last post, fitting of the heat shield was an exercise in restraint and futility given that I am blessed with average size hands. The restraint was knowing at the outset that this was going to be tricky and not loosing my rag and chucking it around the garage in a fit of rage or filling up the swear jar  . The thing is, I wasn't replacing thew whole heat shield oh no, it was just the last third of it that needed replacing and rather helpfully, this section can be unbolted from the bit that goes around the manifold and bolts up to it in a very convoluted way. I believe Waylander has had the joy of replacing the whole item through the wheel arch so mine was looking like an absolute breeze by comparison. Only of course it wasn't.
In the best tradition of Frankensteining two parts together, the bloody things had slightly different profiles which meant that I needed to apply downward pressure at the same time as trying locate a blind bolt hole that the aforementioned average sized hands could not get to. It was as I was doing this that I noticed that the bracket which provides support for the heat shield was cracked and would likely fail in the near future. Fortunately, the replacement heat shield came with the bracket and a quick spruce up saw it loosely mounted in place and the struggle withe original task resume.

Now, fortunately for me I am currently in possession of a gangly teenage house elf of bean pole proportions but at 6'4" he has not only big feet but most usefully on this occasion, long thin hands- just right for squeezing between the heatshield and manifold to get the bolt in place. By joining several extension bars I could push down on the heatshield thus giving a little more room but more importantly pushing the two parts together so the bolt holes lined up. And just like that, it was joined! :bounce:
The remaining bolts went in fairly easily after that and then it was fully fastened down to the engine casing which then meant we were ready for the following day (today) when the plan was to get the engine mounts and cross member back in.....
