How do they control knock?

The 931 from standard?

Steves one?

or any of the parts he is thinking of using?

The guy from Mittelmotor.

When does he stop adding timing? There is no way to get near the knock threshold without listening to the engine.

I don't know how he does it.

Some people use electronic or traditional "Det Cans", some people use a knock monitor or something like a J&S Safeguard, I use something else which warns of detonation before it happens.

But how he does it, I have no idea.

Visited a friend on Saturday and as a coïncidence I saw in his workshop this 924CGT that Mittelmotor did, it had just come in for some servicing work.

Very nice car.

Hi
I have been reading this thread with interest , as I have just embarked on a new project to build a 924 turbo track car.

I am a long time Porsche enthusiast , but up until recently always aircooled , so I am facing a steep learning curve.

I spoke to Steve - CarreraRSR last night , who very kindly sold me a back box for the car , and suggested I post up a picture of my engine , as I'm not sure what it is , and he suggested you guys would probably have some ideas ....

Thanks in anticipation
Mark

On holiday at the mo so replying on my phone.
That engine is the last one built for what was a race-winning car.
It has Wossner forged pistons and Arrow Precision steel con rods along with ARP con rod bolts. No doubt crank will have been fully prepped. It has ARP headstuds. The head was fully ported with larger 42 or 43mm Mercedes inlet valves. Most of the intake is jenvey with custom two piece plenum.
Dry sump system is from pace. Clutch has alloy 911 pressure plate with a helix paddle friction plate I think.
Engine made 393hp on rollers with average size Garrett and high octane Elf fuel. Would no doubt make more with a 'proper' turbo :-)

I take it this all came from Prepfab?
If you decide to sell the exhaust manifold I would be interested.
You have a fantastic engine there for a race car. You should start a build thread. If I can help with anything I'll be posting :-)

That was quick Wes. I did tell Mark he'd have a buyer :D

Maybe it could be used as a good template?

My Mittelmotor dizzy arrived this morning but I'm away until Friday night! Oh the wait.

Haha I had a huge double take after seeing the photos.
I've no doubt Hayward and Scott could knock more out... at a price :-)

I received your email Steve. Lovely photos of your car. Can't wait for the mag feature and I can't think of a better car for a feature.

Mittelmotor dizzy is going to be interesting.

Thanks for all that info Wes :) , you are right , this all came from Richard at Prepfab.

I wasn't entirely sure which stage of evolution this particular engine was , as it appears that it has had several different set ups.

Unfortunately , the head is just a bare casting , and there are only 4 head studs there , so I assume he never rebuilt the engine after he bent the valves.

I wonder if the head was maybe amongst those bits that sold on Ebay a few weeks ago  , (unfortunately a short time before I bought this  )

I will certainly start a build thread , as I have a few plans for the car which it would be good to run past more savvy 924 people like yourself.

thanks again Wes , and enjoy your hols

Cheers
Mark
